End of Suez Cease-Fire Brings Quiet Across Canal
Across the Suez Canal Arab and Israeli forces stayed on high alert after the seven month cease-fire expired. Egypt’s Sadat rejected renewal, citing Israel’s refusal to withdraw from 1967 territories, while both sides pledged not to start firing. A Palestine guerrilla raid in Syria triggered Israeli retaliation with no casualties. Sadat’s Moscow trip and Brezhnev Kosygin Podgorny talks were announced in a Cairo address. Abba Eban said Israel would respond in kind if fired upon.
