Indians Get Eagles Feathers for Tribal Costumes

About a thousand eagle feathers are en route to the Southwest from the Patuxent Wildlife Research Center to aid ceremonial costumes of several American Indian tribes. The feathers, saved from dead eagles, were gathered by the Fish and Wildlife Service after Albuquerque official Larry Merovka urged action to address a shortage. The larger wing and tail feathers from golden and bald eagles will be distributed to tribes, honoring the eagle in tribal songs and dances.
