Penitentiary sentences and penalties under proposed code changes
The discussion outlines changes to felony penalties and sentences. It notes that fines may replace prison terms for felonies, with fines ranging from 1 to 5000 dollars, and reduces maximum sentences for serious crimes. It also revises prior conviction rules and limits prosecutions to single criminal episodes with required joint trials.
Proposed criminal code would cap sentences at thirty years
The proposed code limits consecutive sentences and aggregate imprisonment to 30 years, preventing multiple first degree felonies from yielding multiple punishments. It also bars increasing a sentence after guilt reversal, a change tied to post‑trial misconduct during appeals. Attachment A contrasts current law with the proposals, noting broad penalty reductions affecting theft and other serious crimes.
