Lawmakers Study Fast Fund Switch for Welfare
Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes pushes legislation to reorder funding priorities, giving the Welfare Department top priority in the omnibus tax fund to cover 34.9 million for the current fiscal year. He argues this avoids deficit spending or a hurried tax bill and would not affect other claims, though it may shift funds from the teachers retirement system temporarily. If no new revenue arrives, welfare payments to aged, blind, disabled and needy children could stop by June 1.
