Tobacco Industry Size and Lorillard's Dominance
In 1886 the U.S. Internal Revenue report recorded 966 tobacco factories producing 191,592,240 pounds of chew and smoking tobaccos and snuffs with an 8 cent per pound tax. Lorillard & Co. led with 27,892,280 pounds, about one seventh of total output, selling mainly Lorillard's Climax Plug Tobacco as the standard. The firm has long operated the largest factory in the world and paid over 44 million into the Treasury in internal revenue taxes over 75 years. The weekly factory payroll runs about 20 thousand dollars.
