Kidney Disease Remedies and Medical Advertisements Highlight 19th Century Trade

Contests Rejected in House and Senate Seating Decisions

The house committee on privileges and elections finished its work January 11. It found no sufficient grounds to unseat fusionist J.D. Neam, and dismissed Captain Fisher’s charges against Representative Coffee as insufficient to affect his seat. The senate seated Republican Johnson of Phelps county over Hodges. A recount proposal failed. Fisher sought to challenge Coffee’s eligibility citing bank misconduct, but the committee ruled charges unproven and noted potential accountability for expenditures by committees rather than Coffee.

Illinois House considers kidnapping penalty bill in session

An anti kidnapping bill introduced in the Illinois House sets imprisonment up to twenty five years and a fine up to five thousand dollars, with a proviso that a parent may not be punished if legally deprived of custody by court order. Also notes a fire at the Touzalin hotel in Wymore injuring Eva Savage, the Cleveland margarine tax debate, the Prairie cruiser voyage to Paris, and a smallpox scare leading to closures in Murray Iowa.

Abolition debates and urban 'City of Ems' echoes

A jumble of phrases touches on abolition of the whipping post, a boast about Hostetter's stomach remedy, a woman in pockets, and a New Haven nickname. It recalls colonial roots, urban trees dying at alarming rates, and an antiquarian view that values items only after time has diminished their use.

Paignton Plum Pudding Record Returns to Town Tradition

Paignton England revives a plum pudding custom for charity. A 260 pound pudding was drawn and sold, lagging behind a 1858 record of a ton and a half costing 3225. The piece cites earlier weights and ingredients, and notes the event as a public spectacle in the town. Also included are brief notes on Salt Lake’s shrinking lake, Jerusalem artichokes, Garfield tea, and patent medicine ads.
