Tornado deaths rise to nineteen with three missing as western Iowa and eastern Nebraska face extensive damage. Council Bluffs floods halt traffic, bridges vanish, and fires spread while the Nonpareil newsroom drowns in floodwater. Riot clashes reported in Dusseldorf with unrest among Ruhr sympathizers.
Cedar Rapids Sept 29. Illinois Central detective L L Totman and his prisoner Harry Dean aged 17 were wounded in a sun battle at Iowa Falls when an unknown gunman opened fire. Eight shots were fired. Totman may be fatally injured.

Oklahoma City time sees the state supreme court refuse Gov J C Walton a rehearing on legality of a statewide Oct election. The ruling clears a path for an impeachment inquiry by the legislature and possible voter consideration at the coming election unless blocked by injunction. Tulsa reports six missing persons sought after they testified before a military court of inquiry into masked band activities.
Des Moines reports the fifth day of John A. Backman trial as state witnesses link him to the park department payroll padding. Rey Sanford testified he did not sign two checks to him and disputed the city date on those checks.
Mayence reports Franco Belgian officials running the Rhineland and Ruhr railroad recruiting office to hire 30,000 German railway men for service on the Ruhr lines. The drive aims to fill widespread shortages in the system during the postwar period.
A federal grand jury indicted 12 officers and stock salesmen of the Omaha Refining company on eight counts each for using the mails to defraud. Named are L. V. Fox president BE Heaney secretary Job Key Jones director James T Bertwell financial supervisor D. W. Lennox Porter Askew stock promoter M Rosenbalt H BE Pose L L Clark Frank Dent H H Randolph and P R Holt. Porter Askew, a prominent promoter linked to several firms, is the best known figure among the indicted.
H. W. Seaman of Chicago and Clinton Iowa is elected president of the American mining congress with Daniel B. Wentz of Philadelphia as first vice president and E. L. Doheny of Los Angeles as second vice president. L. B. Cate of Salt Lake City is third vice president and J. F. Callbreath of Washington D C is reelected secretary. the 1924 convention site was not chosen.
Sofia reports government troops have crushed fifty soviet republics set up by communists in northern Bulgaria. The movements used machine guns and cavalry to subdue the soviets across several towns in recent days.
Gov J C Walton may speak in Creston at the opening of the Masonic temple on Oct 19. A parade with 1000 Masons from Des Moines and other towns is planned with the Des Moines shrine band and chanters. Ceremonies begin at 3 PM followed by DeMolay installations, a vaudeville show, concert, supper, and a Masonite ball. Final arrangements will be announced soon.
Fred Krisinger a Creston youth has been signed by the Philadelphia Nationals to pitch. The 22 year old, son of Frank Krisinger of West Buckeye street, pitched for the Chicago Great Western shop team and lost only two games in 1923. He will report in spring for practice at Philadelphia. He is due in Creston soon to spend the winter with his parents.
In Macon Georgia on September 29 the jury in the Dr A Yarborough rioting case was discharged by Judge Dunn after failing to reach a verdict. The trial centered on rioting charges against Yarborough with the case moving to city court.
President Coolidge and his cabinet discussed a plan to erect a memorial for the late President Harding. It was indicated the appropriation would be backed by the chief executive and the cabinet members who served under Harding.
Rio de Janeiro held a special Memorial Day for automobile accident victims with broad public interest and support. Officials hope it becomes an annual observance.
Casper Wy Sept 29 Three bodies badly bruised recovered today from Coal Creek where Burlington passenger train No 30 plunged through a bridge Thursday night Rescue work begins as water recedes and crews enter wreckage to determine death toll and search all coaches still embedded in sand.
Jay Griswold former Cedar Rapids resident son of Mr and Mrs E B Griswold is listed among the missing in Casper Wyo wrecks. He worked for Standard Oil as a contractor in building oil storage and draining tanks and had been in the west for seventeen years awaiting word to return home.
Rome reports that Greece paid 560 600 000 lire to Italy as indemnity for the January assassinations. The payment was received by directors of the Bank of Italy today.
Grimsby England Sept 29 The first steamer to carry a full load for barter sails soon for the Kara Sea. The Trotsky owned by Russian Norwegian Navigation Co will exchange tea coffee wines textiles for furs skins swans down and horsehair. Caravans will carry the goods about 2000 miles to a Kara Sea point where the Trotsky will touch.
Rome reports that fascisti who seized power to end strikes ordered a walkout. The Confederation of Fasgieti Corporations chief directed workers to strike seeking three days per year of service compensation for dismissed staff and a two week full pay vacation annually. The order was followed.
