Washington September 19. A collision occurred between the battleship Arkansas and the destroyer McFarland during night maneuvers off Newport. The destroyer suffered serious damage and was escorted to Boston. The incident was reported to the navy department.
Federal judge Martin J. Wade sternly warned bootleggers after Melvin E. Hinds of Leon pled guilty to possessing three gallons of white mule. The hearing also involved George Adams of Minneapolis and James Saxton of Missouri facing narcotics charges and 30 day jail terms with fines. Adams, found with morphine and cocaine, confronted narcotics danger. Wade urged strict penalties to deter addicts. A separate land suit Kent vs Bingham in Texas involved partial payments and contract annulment.
A nonpartisan farm bloc state committee was named at the state fair to back candidates favorable to farmers. Headquarters opened in the Observatory building and district representatives will determine committee membership. Eighth district names include Senator S. C. Rees of Hamburg and Rep. Co. D. District court punished Alfred Hamilton Harry Bliss and F J Taylor with one year in jail and $1000 fines each for looting box cars. Nel Dickey received a $50 fine and jail time on a similar charge. The crimes spanned months with goods including dresses shoes coats and tires recovered. Railroad detectives led the case and the state pressed a strong prosecution.
Lincoln Nebraska University students Carl Springer and Edna Boorman died after a crash blamed on unlawful speed and reckless driving by Ernie Grainger a Lincoln fraternity man. A manslaughter warrant against Grainger was expected to be issued.
