California swept by flames with eight million dollars in loss at Berkeley. The blast destroyed homes forcing about 2,500 people from their dwellings. Local authorities mobilized firefighting resources as crews battled the inferno through the night.
Des Moines reports Mrs Ida B Wise Smith will decide at the Iowa state convention in Shenandoah on Oct 2 3 and 4 whether she remains W C T U president after being named director of Christian citizenship by the national convention. She says she accepted the post only if the state could decide her release status. She has not accepted speaking engagements elsewhere pending the Iowa decision.
Washington D C Sept 18 Announcement by the public health service confirms a bacteriologically proven case of bubonic plague in San Francisco. The patient is a woman and officials say there is no fear of an epidemic.

Harry Bayles a former Creston boy was mangled when he fell under a Rock Island switch engine at Oelwein Saturday night. He worked as a brakeman on the Oelwein Marshalltown run. A number of fellow workers passed through Creston today en route to Cromwell where the funeral was held this afternoon.

They were found in a gravel bed atop a high hill a site Indians sometimes chose for burial officials said they could not say to whom the bones belong and noted they seem unaccounted for.
The grand jury indicted Rev. L. D. Uttson of Vaukon Iowa for rape. He posted a $3,000 bond furnished by former friends and parishioners after being bound over last spring and posting $2,000 following Judge Cooney’s $5,000 writ denial. Henry Leha was indicted for rape on the complaint of a father from former Leha household members.
