San Francisco September 17 Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle will remain jailed without bail on a murder charge and face a preliminary hearing next Thursday at 1 p m before Judge Sylvain J Lazarus with trial to follow. If convicted, he could face the death penalty. Meanwhile Arbuckle party staterooms were canceled with only attorney Frank Dominguez keeping a berth. Rumors of defense quarrels swirled as Brady and aides pressed murder indictment over manslaughter. Federal action looms with possible Volstead Act indictments against Arbuckle and party.
Washington reports an amendment by the senate house finance committee to the tax bill requiring hotels to levy a 10 percent tax on the amount charged to transients above 5 dollars for singles and above 8 dollars for doubles.

Control methods include burning nests with a kerosene torch or spraying with lead arsenate. For spraying mix two pounds of dry form or four pounds of paste with 50 gallons of water. In tall trees, remove nests by brushing with a pole to wind around and extract the nest.
An aerial club for midwestern aviators will be proposed at a Kokomo meeting September 22 to 24. Over 100 pilots have replied they will attend. A national flying meet is planned with events at the commercial aviation field near Kokomo, which hosts Fifth Army Corps aviation HQ.

Clinton, September 17 Engineer Thomas R Lea 62 of Clinton died at a Cedar Rapids hospital last night raising the death toll to three from yesterday's Chicago Northwestern wreck. Fireman Johan Johnson of Clinton drowned after being thrown into a creek and Thomas McConnell riding blind baggage also killed.
Geneva Sept 17 Open diplomacy won out as the league assembly adopted Lord Robert Cecil's resolution for full publicity at league council meetings. After a week of fiery speeches delegates prepared for more debates but newly elected assembly president Van Karnabeck urged focus on work to avoid the league seeming merely a debating society.
Three masked bandits robbed a downtown poker game in St Paul near noon. A player was killed and the hotel proprietor seriously wounded. The robbers escaped with $300, the amount left on the table.

Arthur and Ken Hickman were sentenced to life terms for the murder of Bert Patton a Page county deputy sheriff February 12 at Bingham Iowa Their attorneys filed notice of appeal to the supreme court indicating plans to challenge the conviction.
Johnnie Kilbane featherweight world champion fought Danny Frush of Baltimore in a scheduled twelve round bout at Dunn Field Cleveland on September 17. The Cleveland boxing commission named two local judges while Kilbane declined to join reporters Sammy Hall and Richard Guy from Chicago and Pittsburgh.
Gen George H Wood president of the board of managers for national homes for disabled soldiers said today that veterans at the Milwaukee National Soldiers Home will not be removed. The original order would have sent non disabled veterans to Leavenworth Hampton or Danville after a conference decision.
Des Moines police report the body of W. O. Brammer, 55, a real estate worker, found on the Des Moines river bank. They say he apparently died by his own hand and had been planning to present an engagement ring to another woman the night before. Brammer was married.

In Chicago Illinois on September 17 Miss Mona Dunne daughter of former Governor FP Dunne received 1073 dollars in a jury verdict for the loss of a fur coat and gloves while a guest at the South Shore Country Club. The coat vanished from the club checkroom during the attendant’s absence.
