Secretary Jardine warns no more price forecasts from the Agriculture Department after a cotton market drop sparked protests. Southern senators allege the forecast cost cotton planters hundreds of millions and seek potential congressional review.
The search for 14 year old Lyle Messner in the Kathleen Forrest case continues as officials probe Iowa and Illinois. Kathleen's funeral is held while relatives, friends, and authorities pursue clues from plays of the girl and reports from Miss Virginia Gudzus.
Fifty one fairs in forty five Iowa counties receive county aid, the Union county fair reported. The board may give up to 1000 dollars yearly but no action yet. Last year several fairs in Adair Cass Taylor Warren Page and Shenandoah areas each received 500 dollars or less. Directors have not decided on next year’s exposition.
Miss Ella M. Day Union county superintendent of schools will assist in revising premium lists and exhibit classifications for the state fair schools exhibit. She will serve on the committee with ten Iowa educators. Union county rural schools earned state recognition for their exhibits. this year they won first prize at the state fair after a third place finish last year. The committee reports by November 5.
Cotton prices fell by 2.50 to 2.75 dollars a bale in New Orleans after morning fluctuations as traders awaited a price forecast statement from Secretary Wardine amid ongoing controversy.
Osceola opens its first year with an anticipated 35 to 40 junior college students. The college draws registrants from Clarke County and nearby areas as 729 pupils register in the combined college high school and grade schools under A. W. Crane. Football teams exist for both the high school and junior college with heavy schedules planned.
Grade and rural school teachers of Union county will study spelling and silent reading methods on Saturday, Sept. 24, in Creston. Miss Ella M. Day announces the county study center meeting as part of county-wide coordination in school work. Prof. Fred Cram and Prof. E. L Ritter of Cedar Falls will assist. The silent reading work continues from last year.
Virginia testified to the coroner that she refused and the boy became angry, grabbing Kathleen before the scene continued on page two.
County board of supervisors reviewed four petitions to re locate sections of the secondary highway system with no action taken. One plan would convert a township road near Spaulding to a county road, others seek straightening routes in Lincoln and Jones townships to reduce turns and hills, with work on a Twelve Mile creek channel change approved and soon underway.
Matilda Connor received a divorce decree from Francis Connor in district court yesterday and was awarded custody of their three children. Olga Kessler’s divorce suit against Frank Kessler of Creston was under consideration by Judge H. H. Carter this forenoon.
Heavy rain in Cres ton provided only brief relief from a record hot wave. Rainfall measured one and a quarter inches around 1 am. by 9 am skies cleared and by 1 pm the thermometer was 85. Fair and warmer conditions forecast for tonight and Saturday.
The American Legion's aeronautics committee declares the U S is the most backward among first class powers in military air force development. It urges a separate National Aeronautics Department with cabinet representation and a president appointed aeronautics board to study creation. It notes Lindberghs flights show what can be achieved with support, not current gains.
Madison, Wisconsin. John R. McClintic, 23, captured after a fight with police, confessed to robbing the South Side State Bank. Judge 8. B. Cehien sentenced him within 12 hours to 15 to 25 years in the state prison at Waupun. Jurors for the October term of federal court in Creston were drawn today and N. F. Reed of Des Moines accompanied the process.
The Union county board of supervisors decreed higher dog license fees for next year. Males will pay $1 and females $5, up from the current $1 and $3.
County farm bureau agent L A Nordhausen reports a heavy rain this morning revived brown pastures and late corn fields. Moisture will help fall plowing begin promptly and support ear development in some early corn while warning of chaffy corn if heat remains high. Winter wheat sowing advised after Sept 24 with caution to avoid springing too early.
Leo the movie stunt lion joins Martin Jensen on a non stop flight from San Diego to New York. The monoplane weighs about 4700 pounds and the duo expect to Reach New York in around 22 hours with Leo eating steaks before takeoff.
Des Moines Iowa Sept 16 AP union miners and mine operators are in deadlock over a wage scale. George Heaps Jr president of the Iowa Coal Operators association warned that activities in the closed Iowa mine fields cannot renew without a conference to adopt an agreement. He had just returned from Chicago where he attended talks on the Illinois coal strike.
Heavy rains fell across nearly the state except the southeast last night ending the heat wave and easing milk famine fears. Forecasts expect generally fair weather with cooler days ahead but highs may not drop to true cool. Boone logged 3.52 inches, Waterloo hit 100 degrees, and other cities recorded near record heat before cooler air moved in. Des Moines and Estherville saw much lower highs as the cooler spell began.
Union county board of supervisors purchased a 30 horsepower Caterpillar tractor and two late-type wheel graders for immediate delivery at a cost of 4200 dollars. County engineer Guy A. Perry says good fall weather could allow substantial county road work using the new equipment and notes Adams county was inspected for special graders that move a cubic yard of earth at ten cents versus thirty cents with common graders.
Ministers in the Des Moines Methodist conference will continue to donate salaries to a pension fund. Pastors earning over 1505 dollars pay 1.5 percent. others pay 0.5 percent. A move to publish donor names failed. Dr. E M Evans of Des Moines reappointed financial agent.
Clarinda Sept 16 Special to The Advertiser Funeral services for Dewitt Beam 25 of Clarinda killed when a coupe overturned eight miles north on federal road No 7. John Koutsandreas and Wilbur Linebaugh injured though not seriously. Car owned by Koutsandreas was demolished after flipping three to four times as a rear tire went flat.

Chicago reports outline a scheme where Cochran and associates allegedly drained about two million dollars from Volkszeitung Publishing by taking control of the German daily and borrowing from subscribers. Arthur Lorenzo, a former editor, is named in the case. Cochran faces removal proceedings with a $10 000 bond and a Sept 30 hearing.
