A special Creston School Board meeting is called for eight tonight at the High School to address students living in one district and attending another. Parents may present concerns as the board reports on cases and seeks equitable solutions.
Hemspread New York report states Mrs Bertha Kubal collected a reward after aiding in the capture of her husband Lawrence, who was convicted of murder.
Minnie Bartlett appeared before Town Supervisor H. R. Smith with her baby on June 22 to claim $900 of a $1,000 reward offered for information leading to the murder arrest and conviction. Her brother in law paid the rest after coaxing her to reveal her husband’s confession. She wept, kissed the supervisor’s hand, as Kubal remains in Sing Sing’s death house.
The U S circuit court of appeals ruled John Meints of Luverne Minnesota is entitled to damages from several neighbors who tarred and feathered him in August 1918 over accusations of disloyalty. The Minnesota district court had ruled against Meints, but the appellate court reversed and remanded for a new trial.
Managua reports the Nicaraguan government sent 3,000 well equipped troops to the Hoduran frontier to end a revolutionary uprising. Rebels had seized several villages but fled into Honduras where Gen Cardona’s forces captured five generals, seventeen colonels, thirty six captains, forty five lieutenants and 1,208 soldiers. Ninety percent of the world’s cloves come from Zanzibar and Pemba off East Africa.
U.S. Deputy Marshal S A Plum arrested Walter McMurphy near Adair and Ferest Miller near Elliston Iowa for liquor violations. McMurphy pleaded not guilty and was bound over to the federal grand jury under $500 bond. Miller pleaded guilty and posted $1,000 bond. William Wheeler of Kelerton was arraigned, charged with selling liquor, and bound over to the grand jury under $500 bond.
A Chicago Burlington and Quincy team of heating engineers is in Creston refurbishing the depot heating system. The work is underway and expected to take one to two weeks with the plant rebuilt to "be the same as new" and ready for winter service. The crew will then move to the next town as directed by inspectors after finishing in Creston.
Workmen are busy veneering the Willard Theatre building with brick. J H Patt, owner, erected a brick structure at the rear of the Creston Hotel where the Morning American stood. A frame building at the rear of the Willard entrance was later veneered and painters have been finishing the exterior woodwork.
The case of Plummer versus Elliott went to the jury late yesterday after three hours of deliberation. The jury returned a verdict in favor of C. B. Elliott over a Ford dispute valued at 250 dollars.
Marl Conrad the world bantamweight champion will face Sam Neiman of Des Moines in Winterset on Friday night September 9 with the title at stake.
A New York report says holdup men spared a young woman her wrist watch after stealing her belongings. The watch had been a gift from a friend who died serving in France, making the item valuable beyond its material worth.
Two voluntary bankruptcy petitions were filed yesterday afternoon with U S Commissioner John C Hunt. Joseph E Hartman and Evelyn Hartman of Shannon City Iowa listed farm assets of 50215 and liabilities 4522 75 with exempt property 974 Evelyn Hartman claimed liabilities 3906 and assets 98
Douglas MacLean and Doris May headline the Paramount Aircraft comedy Lets Be Fashionable at the Strand Theatre Friday and Saturday. The pair stumble through society spoofing acts and fables with supporting cast George Webb Wade Boteler Norris Johnson. Fatty Arbuckle appears in His Wifes Mistake on the program with one long round of laughter.
The Ladies Literary Society will meet Friday afternoon at Mrs. W. B. Allen’s home on West Adam Street. This first regular meeting of the year features a business program arranged by the program committee. All members are urged to attend.
The regular meeting of Progress Lodge No. 207 I O O F will be held this evening at their hall on North Pine street. In addition to routine business, candidates will receive work in the second and third degrees.
Horace M. Towner, Iowa Eighth District congressman, arrived in Creston after visiting Bedford Corning and Fremont county towns. He met Spanish American War Veterans and American Legion members at the Hotel Iowana, receiving thanks for supporting ex service men and replying to letters within 24 hours. He plans to depart for Charlton tomorrow morning.
