Market notes show cattle receipts at 22 000 with steers and yearlings steady while other grades slow. hogs receipts 46 000 with prices 15 to 25 lower and top around 9.45. sheep receipts 22 000 with native lambs lower. Grain quotes from Chicago close with mixed commodity futures and 1875–1900 educational figures interwoven in a broader column.
Samuel Fallows born 1835 in England grew to become a Wisconsin farmer, educator, and Civil War officer. He led the 22nd and 49th regiments, served as Wisconsin superintendent of public instruction, and later presided at Wesleyan University Bloomington, initiating its early law school and other reforms.
Chicago police quell a riot at Lincoln Park sparked when a baseball throw hit an Assyrian picnicker. A mob of over a thousand whites and blacks clashed. more than a hundred officers and park reserves restored order. A negro player, an Assyrian, and two others were detained.
In Pueblo Colorado a red racer snake attacked an automobile biting the tire puncturing it. The report notes the North Pacific great seal herd under protection has grown to 600000. Canadian railroads show only seven of fifty six operating paid dividends in the last fiscal year.
This morning at eight o'clock Father H. V. Malone officiated the ceremony uniting Jessie Margaret Noble and William Raymond Ward in marriage. Attendants were Mabel Ward and Arthur Ward. A wedding breakfast followed at the bride's parents' home. The couple, from this community, will honeymoon to Florence and return to live on a farm three miles north of the city.
The Loyal Workers of the Christian Church will gather in the church parlors Wednesday afternoon. The usual good attendance is desired at that time.
The Spizzerinktum Club gathers at Mrs John Miller's home just south of the city on Monday afternoon for its regular social gathering. Attendance by members is encouraged.
The Jerusalem Ladies Aid Society will hold a meeting on Thursday afternoon at the Jerusalem church. A good attendance is desired by those in charge.
The Platte Sunday School Association holds its convention on Sunday September 17 at the Platte Center Presbyterian church. It will be an all day session with the program to be announced in this paper at a later date.
Lincoln Home Bureau members will meet Mrs Lillie Sadler on Wednesday afternoon for a flower slip and bulb exchange. A show talk on winter flower care will be given as part of the occasion.
The nurses of Greater Community Hospital held a Monday evening picnic at McKinley Park to honor Alice Bolton who recently resigned as superintendent. The event was described as a pleasant gathering for the young women.
Clyde Phenix and Columbus Puller of Noxon Pa died when a locomotive boiler exploded at the Lehigh Valley railroad roundhouse in Sayre Pa. Archie Goodwin of Mahmaroneck NY and Philip Johnson of Philadelphia were badly scalded but expected to recover. An investigation will be conducted.
Opal Atwood of Nevinville called in Creston this morning. Mrs. E. L. Edwards of Shannon City shopped in Creston today. Mrs. J. L. Buckman of Afton visited Creston this morning. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Browne and family move from Broad Street to North Division Street and Frank Dougherty will inhabit the Browne home. Roy Fulkerson of Mistle and Mr. and Mrs. Caldwell of Humeston, visiting Shenandoah, arrived in Creston to visit at 412 South Elm Street with Mr. and Mrs. Harry Brown for a few days.
Edward Tehel files a voluntary bankruptcy petition stating residence here and former Cedar Rapids business Eastern Iowa Beverage Co. He lists liabilities at 8502.01 and assets at 2089.20, with 350.00 claimed as exempt.
Vernon Harmon of Wichita Kansas travels with the remains of his wife to Creston. The body will be taken to the home of her sister Mrs N Walker at 807 Walnut Street where a brief funeral service will be held at 2 00 p m followed by church services at the Christian church at 2 30 p m.
Miss Alice Belton, superintendent of the Greater Community Hospital, has resigned her position. Hospital officials are now considering a successor for the post.
Word from Creston reports John W Harmon stricken after a Des Moines trip and now in critical condition. He is cared for at the home of his daughter Mrs Walter Crewlord in Des Moines.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the family home 405 North Walnut for Frances Marie Tinker the little daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Tinker. Rev Woodsum of the Baptist church officiated and many friends attended. Vocal selections were rendered by Mr and Mrs Fred Lindman.
A Lorimor committee of about thirty prepared for the Union County Farm Bureau Picnic to be held September 20 and 21 in Lorimor Iowa. The two day program includes a large parade one day with a floats and car contest, ball games, a baby contest for ages one to two, an address by H. W. Byers on citizen duties, free evening moving pictures, and parking for forty acres. Local churches lodges merchants and township representation participate with the Lorimor Chamber of Commerce promoting the event as one of the county’s largest gatherings.
Farm bureau activities spread through Plymouth and Allamakee counties with meetings and social events linked to fundraising and education. W Inmann spoke to 500 at Forest Mills, while Guthrie County outlines an average farm tax of 204 dollars and 75 cents on a 160 acre unit. Scott County women raise funds and plan a Des Moines fair exhibit, and poultry record flocks are showcased by S W Henn. Monroe County hosts 200 plus attendees at their annual meeting with home millinery demonstrations and talks on outreach. Soil erosion meetings occur in LeMars and seed potato vigor will be tested on Plymouth county farms along with a 130 farmer hog vaccination school.
Jury members were excused again today and a trial date set for tomorrow in the case of S. R. Matheny versus Ed Siegfried over a personal injury claim. Matheny alleges Siegfried shot him in the toe with a revolver, while Siegfried calls it an accident.
Local fans anticipate a doubleheader as Creston faces Ottumwa at the Creston diamond tomorrow and Thursday. Ottumwa arrives fresh from the Mississippi League with a season of strong play to date.
J P Stack departs from the Farm Bureau office for a one day trip to Searants Bluffs Iowa to visit his father this morning.
Mrs Herbert Lane of Larwill Indiana describes four years of fatigue nervousness and dizziness. She credits Lydia E Pinkham's Vegetable Compound with restoring her health enabling her to work on a farm and care for three children and she urges other women to try it for similar troubles.
