Des Moines dates Sept 1 Mrs Harland J Paige 21 sustained severe burns when a gasoline stove exploded just after lighting. She escaped death by rolling on the floor to extinguish the flames and is reported in critical condition today.
The Lady Kindersley, a gasoline schooner, was abandoned as Arctic ice moved it northward. Its crew were rescued today by the Boxer after taking to lifeboats.
Des Moines AP reports the explosion at a local grocer shop increased the death toll to nine with proprietor P E Vallandingham dying early today. Two others, Donald McBride eight, and Theodore Heather twenty four, were reported near death.
Sioux City Iowa Sept 1 1917 Sadie Smith police matron since 1917 died Saturday midnight from injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Remsen Iowa The death closes a long service to the city and police department with Smith noted for her work and dedication.
