Daring Hold up nets $93 000 driver killed

Desperate gunmen raided an armoured bank car in Buffalo New York killing driver Charles Clifford and wounding guard Lewis Yerrington and messenger John Meyers. The robbers fled with about $93 000 of cash from the transfer between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Buffalo. A Marine Trust reward of 10000 was offered for information leading to arrests.

Reichert Receives 20 Year Sentence In Wife Kill Plot

A J Reichert transfer man was sentenced to twenty years after pleading guilty to attempting to kill his wife and youngest child. The plan involved Reichert and Ben Leonard arranging the murder on a hill near Kildeer with the couple and infant to be killed by a car rolling off an embankment. Leonard alerted authorities and Reichert confessed after arrest. Reichert had insured his wife's life for 1500 dollars.

Railroad Consolidation Absolutely Necessary

Senator Cummins of Iowa urged consolidation of mail reading as absolutely necessary after a White House visit. He warned that 75 000 to 80 000 miles of lines could be abandoned. he said most railroads are in good condition but weaker lines earn too little while some roads earn too much.

Mr. and Mrs. Fulton Stream of 607 North Elm celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on Wednesday marking 30 years in Spaulding. They wed Oct 28 1875 in Osceola with Rev. Charles C. Munbee. The couple has two children and one granddaughter. An afternoon dinner and reception followed with many local and distant relatives attending.

Murphy on Trial in Allamakee Forgery Case

Dennis J Murphy a Waukon lawyer and financier faces district court indictment charging forgery of an $8 000 mortgage certificate. Judge Cooney overruled insanity dismissal and 12 jurors including one woman were seated. The case follows a prior conviction for forging a $500 note. John E Reilly testified to identify Murphy signatures on letters notes and policies.

Mitchell Fails On Free Speech Immunity Claim

Colonel William Mitchell lost two attempts to stop his general court martial. The court overruled objections to jurisdiction and to the form of proceedings. The defense argued immunity due to free speech. the prosecution said presidential authority allowed the charges. The case paused for lunch and to reconvene at 2 p.m.

Gideon, Former Creston Resident, Dies in Carcross

H. J. Trusty of 500 West Montgomery street received word from his sister Mrs Ed Gideon of the death of her husband, a former Creston businessman, who lived in Carcross Yukon Territory. The same couple ran a hotel in Carcross and the funeral was held at their home there.

New Snow Blanket Falls and Mercury Climbs

Creston awoke to a fine flaked snow that fell Tuesday and continued until about noon. The government thermometer registered a low of 11 degrees above zero, rising to two degrees above the previous night as the sun began breaking through.

Charge Auditor Accused Of Personal Use Of County Funds

Des Moines reports allege that A. W. Chamberlain Clay county auditor since 1909 used county funds for personal use. The charge arises in a report filed with State Auditor MecClune and his two state checkers, noting shortages were made good. The audit will be sent to the attorney general’s office.

Harper Named Attorney for Union County

D W Harper of 302 North Jarvo Street was appointed Union County attorney at a special board of supervisors meeting. He will submit bond and assume duties after Elmer Hunt's 18 month suspension ends. Harper, a Republican, has practiced law over two years and partnered with Et Carroll since January 1. He previously served as a World War II navy ensign. A Chicago woman Alyse T Foley aged 24 testifies she was kidnapped by a fiery suitor in a high powered roadster and forced to marry Joseph Moore 28 son of a wealthy wholesale merchant of Sioux City after an all night tour. The marriage was annulled Wednesday in Sioux City following the alleged kidnaping while Miss Foley stayed at her grandmother's home.

Mrs C B Hicks of Creston Dies at 54

Mrs. C. B. Hicks of Creston died at her home on North Elm Street at age 54 after a stroke of paralysis. She is survived by her husband and daughter Dorothy Hicks and four brothers. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 30 p m at the home with burial at Gsoe Lind Cemetery under Pastor Aumgartner of the Methodist Church.

Harry Rowland of Creston faced a district court jury over charges of larceny of poultry from the Fred Hood farm near Preston. Evidence closed after 19 witnesses. alibi offered. Trial began with jury impaneled Tuesday afternoon. verdict not yet reached at 3 p.m.

England rites mark Creston pupil funeral

High School pupils from Creston attended the funeral of Lawrence England a junior class member at the Methodist church this afternoon. The DeMolay chapter conducted a ritual service after Rev Homer Baumgardner led the sermon. Burial followed at Gradland cemetery. Lawrence was killed Tuesday morning while hunting at Summit Lake. He was the son of Dr and Mrs H E England of North Elm Street.

Hold Ag Conference At Senator Cummins Office

A prolonged agricultural conference took place at Senator Cummins office in Washington with Senator Cummins James G Mitchell Iowa Farm Bureau counsel and Edward Hunningham of the Federal Reserve Board. They discussed conditions in agricultural states especially Iowa and possible remedies by legislation. Cummins said he had plans drawn up but would wait to confer with Representative Dickinson and Secretary Jardine before making them public.
