Jailer Slain as Escape Fugitives Threaten Dubuque
Harold Carlson, one of the men said to have escaped from the Dubuque county jail with Earl Stearnes, was captured near the "Jungles" hoboes' hangout as the county mobilized to pursue Stearnes and two other fugitives. Leo Hemmer, a 29 year old burglary victim, died from bullet wounds after Stearnes fired at him during a jail break incident that also endangered a nearby 6 year old girl. Local posses and deputies swarmed the area but the fugitives remained at large as Hemmer’s widow and two children mourn.

Officers Shoot W C Ryason in Hunt for Booze
A 35 year old Creston man, W C Ryason, was critically wounded by police late Saturday while pursuing bootleggers near the four corners two miles west of Creston on Adams street road. Chief McKee and Special Officer Glen Skelton fired the shot. Ryason was treated at Greater Community hospital with a shoulder, neck, and jaw injury. No charges or arrests were reported as of noon. Mayor Burt defended the officers and said the shooting was to uphold the law.
