Judge J W Willett of Tama urged preparedness for peace at Memorial Day exercises in Creston. He said youths should train for army or navy service and science must advance to keep pace with war methods, not for war but to insure peace. The ceremony drew veterans, American Legion members, and local bands despite rain.
The sealer Hobby heads north on the first Italia search expedition while the Norwegian government takes over the steamer Ingefour to transport one or two navy airplanes to Spitzbergen. The 6200 ton ship will act as a mother ship for aviators to scout ice areas led by Capt Riiser-Larsen and Lieut Leif Ditrichson, veterans of Roald Amundsen's 1925 polar voyage.
Belgrade endured a night of terror with bricks, clubs and firearms as students opposed to the Nettune convention clashed with gendarmes and laborers. Thirty two students and nine gendarmes were wounded, seventeen students arrested then released, and a police restraint prevented wider violence. Italian minister Signor Bordero warned Yugoslavia to suppress rioting and threatened demands for reparations.
Two balloonists died and several were injured when a storm forced 13 of 14 starters to land during the national elimination race. Army No. 3 pilot Lieut Paul Evert died after a lightning strike at about 1,000 feet. The Army No. 1 bag landed safely at Weems Virginia.
Charles Ransom a lineman for the Iowa Southern Utilities at 502 North Cherry street suffered severe burns to his right side when he contacted a live wire while working on a Lorimer pole. He was rushed to Greater Community hospital weak from blood loss but recovery looked probable. No witness saw the contact and safety devices were in use.
Union county auditor announces Saturday night voting help for absent voters in the June primary. Office in courthouse open until 9 30 pm or later if needed. Creston polls 7 am to 8 pm others 9 am to 8 pm. No registration for the primary. voters must register before the general election.

County recorder Miss Laura Dixon placed paper poppies beside each Union county gold star veteran on the World War honor roll in the courthouse corridor. Disabled veterans at Knoxville’s government hospital made the paper flowers. A bouquet and wax flowers centered the frames.
Indianapolis May 31 four men led a raid on about 200 guests at the Broadmoor Country club dinner dance tied to the 500 mile speedway event. Loot estimated between 150000 and 200000 included money jewelry and valuables. Police recovered descriptions but no arrests were made. One victim identified a suspect.
Creston Kiwanis International members gathered Tuesday evening at Hotel Iowana. Miss Pauline Hurburt, club pianist, provided the dinner hour program with songs. Robert Colbert of Dallas, visiting his Creston parents, was the dinner guest of the club.
The roster of living Civil War veterans who are members of T. J. Potterpost Grand Army of the Republic Creston was prepared May 24. Names include A. B. Bamford W. R. Bell W. W. Bradford J. H. Stratton George Wallace Rollin Whittlesey Erastus L. Willis G. W. LaMaster W. L. Scott J. W. Yard. They attended Memorial Day services at the Methodist church yesterday and answered roll call.
Charles J. Hoppe a 26 year old man confessed kidnapping and slaying T year old Dorothy Sielagowski and pleaded not guilty to first degree murder at municipal court arraignment He waived preliminary hearing and was held to the county grand jury without bond The bloodstained clothing found buried behind his home connected him to the crime Hoppe formerly lived at the Sielagowski home Prosecutor Leroy W Hunt announced the Lucas county grand jury will take up the case tomorrow with attorney Fldon H Young listed to represent Hoppe
Rose Eilman county Red Cross nurse will finish her service June 5 and travel to Minneapolis for a public health course. In two months she established a countywide program assessing schoolchildren health needs and delivering reports to every township and rural school. Red Cross plans to hire a nurse again in the fall if the annual drive shows demand for year round service.
Creston youth leaders gained three district offices at the Epworth League convention in Corydon with Kenneth Anderson named district president Reg Ina Abbey third vice president and Ena Weidman junior department superintendent Creston delegates 182 voted for officers and Ralph Tallman left for Chicago on business after the meeting
Washington May 31. Testimony that the Ku Klux Klan paid Senator Heflin for speeches in several states was given by William Zumbrunn, Klan general counsel, before the senate presidential campaign committee. He said Heflin received 250 in Ohio and New York and either 150 or 250 in Iowa, paid by state Klan organizers.
San Francisco May 31 The monoplane Southern Cross started from Oakland at 8 51 am on a 2400 mile nonstop flight to Honolulu en route to Australia Captain Kingsford Smith led a crew of four including US Navy veterans Warner and Lyon The plane lifted off after a rough start and climbed to about 100 feet before heading toward San Francisco Bay with a 26 hour expected flight to Honolulu and then Sydney
Des Moines Iowa May 31 First cultivation of Iowa s corn crop is well under way throughout the state and is half done in many counties while the crop has made an excellent start says Charles D Reed government meteorologist and director of the Iowa weather and crop bureau in a weekend May 29 report Second cultivation has started in many localities planting nearly completed with the average date three days earlier than the last eight years and 11 days earlier than last year Rain needed for oats hay and pastures with drought limited to about 10 south central counties Damaging hail reported at Dubuque Reinbeck and Oskaloosa May temperatures have been near normal for the fourth consecutive week but May 28 freezing damaged garden crops Winter wheat rye spring wheat and barley in good condition but needing rain Few reports of corn damage from pests and less replanting than in many years Seventy five people attended the annual Douglas township farm bureau picnic at the McKee schoolhouse Tuesday evening.
