United States troops were placed on guard on the Laredo international bridge at an early hour following rumors of a planned rebel attack on Nuevo Laredo across the river.
Jimmy Murphy of Los Angeles led every mile of the 500 mile automobile race at the Indianapolis speedway to break the distance record with a time of 5 hours 17 minutes 20.79 seconds at an audience of 135000. He made only three pit stops and retained the lead from start to finish.

An army airplane caught fire and crashed over the Richmond Country Club in Richmond Virginia killing instantly the pilot and a mechanic. The two men's identities were not yet known.
Washington May 31 Secretary Hoover opened a conference of union and non union operators in coal fields and announced he would take responsibility for setting a reasonable price for spot coal during the strike He urged individual operators to agree on a district price even if not all joined in the pact promising the public interest would guide the effort.
In London on May 21 Associated Press reports Winston Churchill secretary for the colonies tells the house of commons that last Saturday s Irish accord strikes at the Anglo Irish treaty provisions. He adds Britain will not tolerate a reestablished Dublin republic and assures British troops in Dublin remain secure awaiting events.
August Henry Kersting 52, general manager and vice president of Clinton Corn Syrup Refining Co., dropped dead in the bathroom of his Clinton Indiana home this morning. He had been with the company in a leadership role for years.

Washington May 1 The soldier bonus bill known as the McCumber plan was reported favorably by the Senate finance committee by a 9 to 4 vote. The effective date was moved from October 1 to January 1, 1923 to allow time to set up the bonus machinery per Senator Walsh of Massachusetts.
The annual war department appropriation bill carrying 333 million dollars was reported today to the senate by the appropriations committee. The measure as returned is about 45 million dollars larger than the house version and roughly 40 million under the year’s expenditure estimate.
Henry E Simpson 82 of Pana Illinois died today at Broken Arrow Oklahoma where he had lived six months for health reasons. He twice ran for president as a Republican candidate and sought the 1880 nomination at the national convention but lost to Garfield.
E R Woods of Porterville fired at a rattlesnake on his bed after spotting it beneath his pillow. The shot killed the snake but clipped the top of his right big toe, ending up a painful accident reported from Visalia California.

Belfast May 21 Associated Press reports fierce rioting followed the shooting and wounding of two constables. Incendiarism and bombing were rampant as police used machine guns to quell the unrest.

Mra WY Cox and her son LeRoy Cox of Kellerton Iowa were injured Tuesday morning when an automobile owned and driven by Mrs S W Hale of Mt Ayr veered off the road jumped the sidewalk and crashed into a tree near the Greater Community Hospital on North Oak street. Mrs Cox suffered a severe hand cut from flying glass and LeRoy was badly cut and brain ed about the head and face. Hale escaped unharmed. The car remained on its wheels and was damaged but the occupants returned home. Earlier Monday evening three young men from Afton and Arispe overturned a car on Fremont street injuring one arm of the Arispe rider. the Afton man was named Thompson. The other Arispe driver's name could not be learned.
Thirteen balloons ready to depart at 3 30 p m for the national race in Milwaukee. The event will select three U S entries for the international contest in Switzerland. Balloons include waterproof baskets and reed types for lake landings. Pilots carry camping gear for possible rough landings in Canada.
