Graduation Day for Creston Junior High Class of 1927

Eighteen graduates receive diplomas at the first annual commencement in the junior high assembly. Principal F D Obert and board president L L McGregor present diplomas. Rev C W Graham delivers the address after invocation and a Nightingale and Zephyr piano piece. Cited selections include Chromatic Waltz and My Faith in Thee, with a girls chorus of named quartets and the class song closing the program.

Crippled Matson Liner Malolo Towed Toward New York

The Matson liner Malolo, 22,000 tons and costing $7,000,000, crippled after a collision with the Norwegian freighter Jacob Christensen off Nantucket lightship, began a 150 mile tow to New York with about 150 aboard. Coastguard destroyers guarded the area as repairs and safe transfer readiness were planned. The ship’s hull suffered a large hole and boiler rooms flooded in heavy fog.

Wind and Rain Storm Injures Trees and Breaks Wires

A strong wind and rain storm broke tree limbs and damaged wires here last night. Iowa Southern Utilities wires snapped at 701 West Adams street, with similar issues at Cromwell and Leon. Two Des Moines long distance lines were down. rural lines remained functioning. Rainfall measured just under a quarter inch.

Two Cars Stolen One Recovered In Local Incident

Chief Art Loudon announced two automobiles were stolen last night with one recovered before noon. A Hatch Motor touring car was left abandoned on a side street after being taken from near the Hatch garage. A 1923 Ford Coupe owned by O N Swett of Creston was stolen from McKinley park during a local dance.

Postoffice to Close All Day on Memorial Day

The Creston postoffice will be closed all day Monday May 30 for Memorial Day. The corridors stay open and lock box mail retrieval continues. No city or rural route deliveries and all windows closed. mail will be dispatched as usual.

Chicago May 27 grain gains lift wheat and corn prices with corn for September at about $1.00 and wheat near $1.51 as analysts warn of drought and poor wheat prospects in the southern plains.

Lenox Church Conference to Feature Simpson College Leader

Lenox Iowa hosts a district Methodist conference on June 1 with Dr. Walter Hillman president of Simpson College Indianapolis as the principal speaker. Hillman will address The Inevitable Christ at 8 pm after a 9:30 am opening. Morning sessions are led by Rev. C B Guest and E L Stone with W H Warrior guiding the afternoon. The theme is Combining Religion with Efficiency in Church Affairs and a noon church dinner will follow.

Mrs Wooldridge Dies Suddenly at 35 in Wausa Nebraska

Mrs Raymond S Wooldridge 35 daughter of Mr and Mrs Mark Noble of near Creston died suddenly at her home in Wausa Nebraska at 8 pm Thursday after one day of illness. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 pm at the Noble home conducted by Rev R H Robinson with interment in Greeland Cemetery. She is survived by her husband, her parents and three sisters.

Memorial Day Observance Planned in Creston School

J P Healey World War veteran and A L Huntington Spanish American veteran will marshal Memorial Day events in Creston. Dr R A Swanson leads arrangements, L J Dickinson will give the mass meeting address at 2:30 p m in the senior high school auditorium. Paraders include fife and drum corps Grand Army of the Republic and other veterans groups.

W. J. Murphy In Serious Condition

W J Murphy born and raised in Creston is seriously ill at Mercy hospital Chicago after an operation two weeks ago. Relapse reported by his sisters Mrs D A Porter and Mrs D P Burns. Murphy son of John Murphy has run a heavy machinery business in Chicago the past twenty years.

Public Schools End Year’s Work

All public schools of the city closed today for the summer vacation. Pupils in grade and high schools completed their examinations Wednesday and returned today for report cards. The junior college ended its first year today with prospects of a big enrollment next fall. St. Malachy’s parochial school will not close for two more weeks.

Marine Captain Kills Nicaraguan Liberal General in Self-Defense

In Chinandega Nicaragua on May 27 Captain William P Richards of the US Marine Corps shot and killed Liberal General Cabulla alleged in self defense. Cabulla had been intoxicated and firing his revolver at people in the street when Richards returned fire, killing him. Cabulla had been labeled a bandit by authorities.

Creston Women Attend State Railways Auxiliary Meet

Creston women Mrs. Tom Else Mrs. T D Ross Mrs. J R Graham Mrs Virgil Lent and Mrs Ed Hipes represented Creston at the annual state convention of the Ladies Auxiliary to the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen in Council Bluffs on Wednesday. Lenox Girl Helen Scott In Serious Condition After Explosion

Miss Helen Scott of Lenox remains in serious condition at St. Joseph hospital Missouri after a gasoline tank explosion caused severe burns. She underwent an operation on Tuesday and continues to suffer from the shock.

Board to visit Ames on June 2 for highway changes

Union county supervisors announce a June 2 visit to the state highway commission offices in Ames to review changes under the new road control law. Paris Treats Lindbergh With Air Stunts Over Paris

Captain Lindbergh flew a French plane over Paris for over an hour paying homage to France’s unknown soldier at the Arc de Triomphe then performed acrobatics at Le Bourget before a watching group of aviators. He inspected the plane, readiness for a Brussels trip, and impressed drome officers with his handling of the craft while cabinet members waited for luncheon at the Ministry of War.

McCauley Sells Repair Shop to Hall

W L McCauley has sold his repair shop at the Elm and Montgomery corner to Floyd Hall who runs a bicycle and repair business on North Oak Street. The sale completed today. McCauley plans to pursue other business interests.

Creston Faders Court Office Saturday Closures

Beginning June 4 the faders court office in Creston will close every Saturday afternoon until September. The annual order was received from the district federal court clerk. Elm Street crossing on the Burlington railroad was being repaired this forenoon and traffic diverted to New York Avenue crossing.

Woodmen Circle remembers dead at two cemeteries

A Woodmen Circle tribute decorated the graves of thirty three members yesterday at Graceland and Calvary cemeteries. A five woman committee led by Mrs Miley and including Mrs Stickland Mrs Else Mrs Hi Carpenter and Mrs Alderson conducted the annual observance.
