Big George Gibson found guilty of first degree murder
George H. Gibson, farmer from near Thayer, was found guilty of murder in the first degree by an eight men and four women jury. He was rushed from the Polk County jail to Des Moines under heavy guard for safety. The jury sentenced him to life imprisonment at hard labor in the state penitentiary. Sheriff Collings died after being shot during attempted service of papers near Thayer on March 8.
