In Iowa City defense lawyers pressed two motions in the Leeper murder case. The first sought exclusion of certain state evidence about Roy Wertz’s death, and the second asked the court to direct a verdict for the defendant. Arguments continued in the afternoon session.
Chicago May 24 Charles Huston of Chattanooga Tenn was appointed chairman of the Ways and Means Committee of the Republican Party today by President John Adams. He succeeds William Thompson in the post.
Five persons were killed in a head on collision of two Texas and Pacific passenger trains on the Santa Fe near Fort Worth Texas last night. One train was on a siding while the other plowed into it after a switch was tampered with.
The next twenty four hours will be cloudy with probable showers tonight and Friday. Temperatures show little change.

The Louisville Courier Journal cites an official who watched a garage for a year as twenty four fast cars carry whisky from Louisville to Chicago in a continuous stream. Each car is driven by a driver and a guard. The arrangement aims to move liquor despite restrictions.
Douglas Fairbanks Jr., 13, son of the famous actor, signed a three year contract with Famous Players-Lasky for a salary of 1000 dollars a week. Work to begin immediately on his first starring picture.
J S Wannamaker, president of the American Cotton Association, assails the crop reporting bureau for allegedly adding five billion acres to 1921 cotton harvested estimates and for not correcting forecasts issued last month. He spoke in St Mathew South Carolina, accusing Secretary Wallace of misstate and misrepresentation.
Washington May 24 President Harding urged a rededication of the American people's aims as outlined in the Constitution's preamble. He spoke at the National Americanization Council urging citizens to better embody national ideals, noting postwar lapses and the need for government to reach high social and business goals.
Essen authorities confirm they asked Berlin to recall Dr Otto Wiedfeldt the German ambassador to the United States and a Krupp director due to the imprisonment of Dr Krupp Von Bohlen and other leaders by a French court martial. They do not know Berlin's response.
New York May 24 The appellate division of the Supreme court sustained the lower court ruling granting Mrs Stillman $7500 monthly alimony and $1500 for counsel fees.
Mason City announces Vern Cutler and Ralph Johnson charged with Melvin Stoker's murder were released today on bonds of 10,000 each. Sheriff Cutler declined to disclose their whereabouts. Sioux City reports Ellis local lodge donates 1500 to Boy Scouts for a memorial hall at Stone Park campgrounds for general use.
Paris reports Premier Poincare resigned today in a terse bulletin from the government. The message provides no further details on the resignation or ensuing actions.
Des Moines Iowa May 24 The 22 million Soldiers Bonus Bonds sale moved a step closer as the State Printer prepared the bond forms for June 2 sale. Governor Kendall Secretary Ramsay and Treasurer Burbank will travel to Chicago to sign the new bonds.
Tallahassee May 24 Gov Hardee signed a measure banning convict whipping in Florida and Agriculture Commissioner McRae issued orders to enforce the law. The action makes whipping of convicts a forbidden practice and directs wardens and guards guilty of it to cease.
Mrs Effie Moyer 21, wife of John Moyer sixty years her senior, freed to return home at McPaul Iowa to settle matters with her husband. He had her arrested for forging checks for several hundred dollars in a case rising from their tied farm life.
Burlington railroad announced to the Labor Board an agreement with Maintenance Way workers. Foremen will receive a raise of four to ten dollars a month while laborers gain one percent.

Sam Kiesling and Catherine Hassell Kiesling celebrated their 50th anniversary with open house at 614 Prairie Ave. Family from multiple states attended, nineteen grandchildren present, and a second wedding ceremony performed by Rev. Baumgardner. The couple, both born in 1852, married in 1873 in Mason County West Virginia and have lived on Prairie Avenue since 1902 with ten children still living.
