Five armed men robbed Union National Bank in Newcastia Virginia this afternoon. One man held pedestrians at bay while three others threatened employees and officers. A fifth bandit jumped the courier and took the money. Bank officials estimate the loot at about ten thousand dollars.
Des Moines May 21 John J Ford former Fort Dees mayor was elected state deputy of the Town Knights of Columbus at the convention here today. John McCormick of Cedar Rapids was elected state secretary and John Howell state treasurer. The convention will close today.
May 24 Richmond Club fans will watch from a new riverbed baseball grandstand built on piles extending into the James River on Virginia Moye Island. The structure seats about 10,000 and allows anglers to fish during game delays, recalling earlier days with Nash and Chesbro legends.
Walter Olier, 26, son of a wealthy Selma-area farmer, died after a sixty day self imposed fast. A WWI conscientious objector, he was jailed at Fort Leavenworth for refusing a form at Camp Dodge. Returning home he became reclusive, refused nourishment, and sought a blessing from the Lord before his death.

Winona Lake Indiana May 24 Rev Jewls Seymour Mudge of Harrisburg Pennsylvania was elected stated clerk of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America at the General Assembly here today. He will take office in April. Three other candidates ran. Mudge received 737 of 82 notes cast. Des Moines Iowa was chosen as next meeting place of the Assembly.
Washington May 2 Senate approved an amendment to increase Navy personnel from 100000 to 120000 while keeping a fixed ceiling, altering the house provision. The action follows a committee recommendation and targets the Navy manpower level for the upcoming period.
