William Big Bill Haywood longtime I W W founder dies in Moscow after a long illness at age 79. He faced trials for hampering the U S government during World War I and for murder but was acquitted in the latter case. He fled the United States after bail forfeiture and disappearance.

Coolidge Studies Farm Aid Bill and Merchant Marine Measure

President Coolidge faces bills from the Senate on farm relief and merchant marine reform. Bureau Plants Corn Test Plot in Union County

The Union county farm bureau planted a corn yield test plot yesterday on the Arthur Schwanz farm near Lori mer. Additional plots on the A Larson farm in Jones township and the Walt wa Master farm in Platte township were to be planted today if weather allowed. A farm bureau meeting was announced for tonight at the Sunnyside schoolhouse in Dodge township by county agent L A Nordhausen.

Rural Schools in Union County End Year Work

Only six rural schools of Union county will be open next week, says county superintendent Miss Ella Day. Seventy six schools closed last Friday and the rest will close today. those open next week will make up time lost due to sickness or similar temporary closings.

Marines Pursue Sandino Rebels After Fatal Nicaragua Clash

In Nicaragua north of Jinotega Marines pursued Sandino rebels who killed one marine and wounded two others in the Paso Real fight. The clash drew 60 to 75 insurgents and 25 Marines, with five rebels killed and five wounded. Captain Hunter led the patrol with medical air drops aiding the wounded as relief columns moved in.

Elks Convention Dates Announced for Ottumwa

Creston members of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks may attend the state convention in Ottumwa June 5 6 and 7 with plans for entertainment including a trap shoot and golf tournament on June 6 and a convention parade on June 7. Des Moines reports note a boy struck by a car and a mine closure due to exhaustion of a coal vein.

Two Women Slain by Girl's Suitor in Omaha Area

Sherman a 22 year old farm hand shot to death Mrs Pochon and her mother in law after attacking Roger Pochon 20 miles south of Omaha He then shot Pochon and forced Felix Deporter to drive him to town leaving the 13 year old girl at the Deporter farm Sherman previously worked for Pochon and is jailed here The assailant's motive traced to rejected attentions to the girl.

Boy Scouts Pass Honor Court Tests

Seven Creston scouts and two from Gravity qualified as second class at a court of honor meeting led by Frank H. Dick at the junior high school. Merit badges went to Creston and Gravity members including cycling beekeeping civics bird study firemanship pioneering carpentry music and star scout status for Buckner. A public invitation is extended for the next meeting on June 7.

Union Board May Approve Adair Route

Union County board may approve turning the North Cherry Street road from Creston to primary No 2 in Adair county into a county highway. Approval from the state highway district engineer supports the plan, but Adair supervisors must remove width and other hold ups before action. Residents seek the upgrade for better east west and Creston access.

Clarke County Opened First Highway Pavement

Clarke County opened its first paved highway yesterday with two miles north from Osceola. Heavy traffic used the new road as work continues toward the Warren county line. When finished in July the route will connect to Des Moines with a paved and graveled state road funded by bond proceeds.

Creston resident pleads not guilty in intoxication arraignment

A Creston resident arrested by police last night pleaded not guilty at justice court arraignment this morning on a charge of intoxication. He faces a trial Saturday forenoon. The Gypsy Trail will be presented at the senior high school auditorium tonight as the annual senior class play. Cast includes Mary McDonough Pauline Jackson and Aiden Shipley. Central Iowa Records the Heaviest Rain of the Spring

Des Moines reports 1.99 inches of rain with river streets and flooded basements as central Iowa endures the heaviest rainfall of the spring. A 26 year old farmer Phillip Thomas of Jasper county was killed by a lightning strike while planting corn. The storm also brought county wide rainfall with Des Moines leading at 1.99 inches and other totals including Sioux City 1.62 and Carroll 1.96.

In Chicago on May 18 eight year old Bruno Bogdon confounds police with stories about missing eight year old John Pyrek. He claims John was locked in boxcars buried in a sand pile or sank in a river prompting searches, river drag plans, and parental pleas to elicit a real clue.

Training Camp Work Discussed for Creston High School

Capt Earl Hendry an Omaha army officer described the work of citizens military training camps this afternoon for Creston high school interest. He reviewed the training given boys who attend camps during the summer at government expense. Feelhaver principal Reckner and Bertholi reserve officers oversee securing applications in the city.
