Des Moines authorities arrest Mrs Irene Gaul who lived with Mrs Janette Simmons as husband and wife for over a year and a half. Gaul says she wore men’s clothing after a Chicago woman induced it and has appeared as a man since 1919. The couple also cared for a child named George Roberts.
Tusko the giant elephant, after a day and night of havoc across Sedro Woolley and nearby areas, caused damage to cars and a barn and tore up poles and orchards. He later returned to calm near the Garden of Eden valley.
President Harding urged the shipping board to keep the Leviathan name on the big liner seized from Germany and used to transport troops. Administration circles said the board had planned to rename the vessel the President Harding.
Des Moines city council postponed indefinitely action on an ordinance to adopt daylight savings for June, July, August and September. The delay leaves the proposal in limbo as officials consider the plan and its four summer months.

Paris on May 17 reported the French government informed the war debt funding commission it was ready to send a special mission to the United States to confer on the payment of the French debt.

Des Moines May 17. A bullet and a rope ended the lives of two Iowans Monday. Fred Matern 66 a Lemars area farmer shot himself in the head with a small rifle. John Ingwerson 22 of Mount Pleasant area hanged himself in a barn. Matern's wife died two years ago. He left four sons and three daughters. Ingwerson's wife and two sons aged 12 and 10 survive.
Chicago officials deployed an armed police force citywide to shoot any suspicious person ignoring orders. Investigators hunted for unexploded bombs in a North Chicago apartment building damaged by fire last night, linked by authorities to terrorists amid the Chicago labor war.

Eldorado Arkansas May 17 A crater about 200 feet wide blew out at the Wild Murphy gas well ten miles north of Eldorado. The main well was producing over 75 million cubic feet daily and gas flames roared for miles. Extinguishing the blaze is no longer being pursued as geysers and burning craters threaten water wells and nearby structures.
Springfield reports one bandit from the Citizens bank robbery near Springfield escaped with 20500 but was captured about seven miles northwest of Lebanon in Laclede county shortly before noon today. Sheriff J M Jones of Lebanon relayed the update.
Marlin Texas May 17 reports say four people are dead or missing after a bridge across the Bravos river collapsed late yesterday. Many were reported missing during the night and remain unaccounted for as officials tally casualties.
Chicago reports two confessions tied to the killings of two policemen during labor unrest. Police say dynamite, fuzes and percussion caps found at John Miller’s home link to the crime spree and the car used by the assailants. Miller claims the vehicle was stolen and he knew nothing of the bombing.
Creston high school will stage the Irving Field Invitation Track and Field Meet in this city on Saturday with about ten to twelve nearby high schools expected to participate. Entries from Greenfield Corning Orient Cumberland Mt. Ayr Willivea Diagonal and Hedford are already in. Prelims start at 9:30 AM with finals at 1 40 PM. Proceeds benefit future athletic activities at Creston High. A Creston vs Greenfield baseball game is set for Friday at Irving Field drawing a large crowd.
Marlin Texas May 17 poor bodies recovered and more than a score of persons rescued after the Marlin Belton bridge over the Brazos river collapsed five miles west of Marlin. About thirty people on the west span watched repair work when the disaster struck. More than a thousand onlookers searched the river tonight as rumors of more deaths spread. Rescued individuals were in serious condition with some unlikely to survive. Some drifted downstream to the falls three miles south of the accident. Boats and rafts were improvised to aid rescue efforts.
Des Moines May 17 William Jennings Bryan may yet be moderator of the general assembly of Presbyterian churches in Des Moines If he arrives in time from California where he is with his ill wife he will deliver the opening address Thursday courtier Florida presbytery indicates he was made alternate due to illness of the elected commissioner State Clerk Lewis Mudge reports Bryan has not yet sent word but Bryan assures he would be here given his popularity with Presbyterians and his work for the church.
Mrs. Mary R. Pike of Newfields New Hampshire died today at age 1 years S months and 4 days. Oldest person in New Hampshire and possibly New England. Her grandfather Captain Luke Brodhead served with Lafayette. Rev John Brodhead her father founded Methodism in New Hampshire. Brother George H Brodhead was a president of the New York Stock Exchange.
