Washington May 15 More testimony on examinations of school textbooks by power utility interests came before the federal trade commission's inquiry into public utility financing in Iowa. Joe Carmichael Des Moines director of the Iowa committee on public utility information described surveys begun in 1924 and later. He testified that local utility managers pressured schools to remove unfavorable books and place them on library shelves. The Iowa committee with 80 members spent about 27000 annually to publicize and curry favor with the public. It distributed tens of thousands of educational bulletins to schools and provided literature to universities while urging principals and teachers to use it in science classes. Letters sought school cooperation and pamphlets were advertised in teachers magazines and newspaper publicity was obtained.

Two Sisters Slain in Bed at Maple Street Cottage
In Louisville on May 15 two elderly sisters Mrs Belle Holmes aged 79 and Miss Kate Satterwhite 72 were found beaten to death in their Maple Street cottage. A trunk was pried open and police suspect robbery as motive. Neighbors last saw them Sunday night after chapel services. Clarence B Stephens, their nephew, discovered the bodies when unable to enter the locked house. He said his mother Mrs Ella Stephens had been ill and that he visited daily to take Mrs Holmes to his home. Post mortems planned.
