Firemen battled a stubborn roof fire at the Treasury Department in Washington D C. Flames leaped high above the long superstructure and threatened the White House before the blaze was extinguished after about thirty minutes. Damage was unofficially estimated at not more than 74 thousand dollars.
Mrs Will McConnell of near Washington Iowa slashed her four year old daughter's throat with a razor and then wounded herself at a hospital where she is in critical condition. The child died shortly after the attack and authorities note the mother had shown signs of derangement recently.
Mr and Mrs Robert J Rombauer marked their sixty fifth anniversary in St Louis Missouri. He 82 she 93. They met in 1849 as Hungarian refugees. Mrs Rombauer widow of Count Theodore Dembinski a major in Kossuth forces. He was an army lieutenant, Civil War colonel of the First Missouri Reserves. They endured exile imprisonment and war campaigns, yet remain active in public service and literature.
From Peking at General Tso Lin's base it was announced that Wu Pei Fu, central Chinese leader, had been killed in action. The report awaits official confirmation.

Australia official output seen at 134,184,000 bushels, while British India’s outlook remains favorable. Fire swept through the A. L. Adeland building at 1407 Douglas street in Omaha's business district destroying a meat shop and an adjoining structure. The blaze caused an estimated $100,000 in damage with origin still undetermined and aided by a stiff breeze.
Mrs. Wm. Shields and Miss Ethel Shields of Afton were seen shopping in the city today, visiting several stores and browsing the street market.
Irving Bunker, 25, shot Elsie Nelson as she walked to a school party near Malay Junction, killing her. He fled to a nearby bank, forced staff to surrender, but the gun misfired. Bunker was captured. jealousy is suspected as the motive.
Des Moines Iowa May 2 Associated Press candidates for the state legislature have been sent questionnaires by Florence Pierce state chairman of the League of Women Voters of Iowa. The questions ask support for the Shepherd Powell bill protecting mothers and babies the maximum hour law for women and admission of competent women to all state boards.
Inseason ably cool weather, lack of sunshine and an absence of sufficient moisture retarded growth of all vegetation in northwest Iowa, northeast Nebraska and South Dakota during the week ending Monday evening. Farmers are ready to plant corn and a few have started. Small grains look well, the winter varieties especially. Fruit prospects are exceptionally good. Late pig litters are much better than earlier ones. Business conditions continue to improve, with collections materially better.
George Neoncoff, sought for the murder of Jack Gillis after a poker game in Valentine Nebraska, was captured in Cedar Rapids by Sheriff J W O’Rourke and local police. Neoncoff offered no comment on the crime. Gillis was the principal winner before the murder occurred last Saturday.
Word arrived that B F Diffenbaugh die at Beach Virginia Tuesday May 2 11 a m He was a longtime Burlington engineer based in Creston and later lived with his son Frank in Beach He is survived by his wife and son and was a brother in law of Anna Diffenbaugh with whom he was well known in railroad circles in this region.
Denver Colorado May 3 bandits fired nine shots of nitroglycerine destroying the First National Bank at Lafayette fifteen miles from Denver. They escaped with about 12000 in currency and Liberty bonds.

Indiana returns show ex Senator Albert J. Beveridge ahead of Senator Harry S. New by 17,759 votes with about 85 percent of Republican tallies reported. Beveridge had 159,855 to 142,066 for New across 2,802 of 2,382 precincts. Marion county results favored New.
A fisherman found a decomposed unidentified man hanging from a willow tree in a Cedar Rapids creek. Coroner says the man likely died weeks ago and cannot be identified. Local authorities described the death as a probable suicide or foul play investigation pending further inquiry.
