Creston high school commercial students won three of four team awards and three of four individual prizes in the annual Creston schools contest. Bedford took the remaining two prizes, with winners Catherine Igoe Beulah Harris Phylis Cole and Marjorie Herriott taking amateur shorthand novice typing amateur typing and novice shorthand respectively.

Afton Couple Surprised on Anniversary
The Coen family marked the forty seventh wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. M. D. Coen of Afton with a surprise gathering at the family home. The couple, married in Davenport, moved to Union county in 1883 and later to Afton in 1911 where Mr. Coen ran a furniture business for fifteen years before selling last year to son Charles. Rain threatened the downtown Music Week but crowds filled the streets for the fourth annual observance. Creston high school directed bands and choirs performed while Mt. Ayr musicians joined later with a little symphony and Treble Clef club. Helen Johnson of Orient wowed as soloist at a high school recital attended by 609 music lovers.

During National Music Week the Baptist church held a special Sunday evening program. Rev Woodsum spoke on music. The combined junior and senior choirs sang four anthems. County Engineer Guy Perry reported federal road markers were placed on the new No 1a section from two miles east of Talmage to the county line. The detour near Four Mile creek remains troublesome as the stream has gone out of its banks and soaked the highway. Miss Clara Hall returned from Winterset after a weekend visit with her parents at Creston.

Chamber to Use Monthly Finance Plan
A new finance plan will be adopted by the Chamber of Commerce this year replacing yearly subscriptions with monthly payments. A committee led by Carl Nord will canvass starting Tuesday forenoon. School tours to neighboring counties are planned to promote the summer school. Elmo Roper and James McCoy lead the southeast tour with posters for offices and banks. Rotarians will tour the west to Red Oak Shennandoah and Clarinda using cars provided by Ray Emerson and George B. DeWolfe, the school superintendent.
