An unidentified woman about seventy was struck and killed by a Chicago Milwaukee and St Paul passenger train two miles below Gordon's Ferry at 2 30 Wednesday night. The body was taken to the Gordon's Ferry station. It is believed she resided in Bellevue Iowa.
Leonard Woe fling nephew of the former emperor Franz Josef of Austria and brother of the former Queen of Saxony has taken the cabaret stage to earn a living. He says he received a pension of 3000 crowns monthly about 5 dollars a week and could not live on it. His debut in Berlin drew a warm, friendly reception from the audience.
President Harding announced the appointment of Charles H. Burge of Pierre South Dakota as commissioner of Indian affairs. George H. Carter of Iowa was named public printer and Thos Robertson of Maryland to be commissioner of cot tons.

Des Moines Iowa March 31 report says Polk County sheriff investigates whether a wounded bandit in the Stuart Myers case died and was disposed between Stuart and Des Moines. A $2,000 reward is posted for the arrest and conviction of the bandits. Also New York March 4 report notes William Cass Baker has given $40,000 to his four children.
Chicago reports fair conditions for tonight and Friday with warmer temperatures expected Friday in western and north central portions. The 24 hour forecast calls for continued mild weather and no precipitation.

Arthur Burnett a 26 year old sheep raiser from Bloomfield Iowa says he was given knockout drops before falling from a three story window in Chicago. George Cotta his wife Beulah and a taxi driver are detained by police as Burnett recalls no cash from a sheep sale though he had 27 dollars on arrival at the hospital.
Neaf and Zimmer, American detectives sentenced in Germany for illegal attempt to arrest Grover Bergdoll, seek a retrial as their jail term takes effect. German accomplices have not appealed. In Washington, the war department reports Neuf and Zimmer released.
Paris reports the French government demands suppression of the free economic zones created by the 1815 treaty and the Vienna neutral military zone. Switzerland may accept ending the military neutral zone per Versailles but will resist abolishing free customs duties in the two small French strips near Geneva.
A feminine novice in banditry accompanied by a man held up Harry Baumstein at Paulina Street between Washington Boulevard and Park Avenue with a small gun. She asked, Now what shall I do, as Baumstein raised his hands. He fled toward a nearby corner and alerted police.
London reports coal miners began leaving pits in various districts this afternoon. The walkout follows a decision by the Union Executive Committee to strike at midnight due to unresolved wage demands. Trade officials say export orders will be rationed if needed.
Petersburg Ind March 31 Harry Carpenter past grand master of the Odd Fellow lodge of Indiana and ex prosecuting attorney of the Fifty seventh judicial circuit was shot at five times by Harvey Hays local contractor Only one bullet took effect After Hays emptied his gun at Carpenter he submitted to arrest but was released when his victim refused to file charges Carpenter will recover There has been feud between the two over matters in the local courts The shooting will be investigated by the Pike county grand jury when it convenes in April
William Glascock of Maysville Kentucky hanged himself after waking in his bed. The rope on the rafter broke and he was knocked unconscious instead of being killed, a local report states.
Pat Moore of Memphis and Jimmy Kelly of Chicago to clash in a ten round bout at Kenosha on April 7. It will be their second meeting with Moore edging the first in close fashion.

Des Moines March 31 Investigation of coal prices retail and wholesale including Iowa and out of state coal proposed in a resolution in the Iowa House by Rep Griswell of Boone. The plan would create a three member commission with the labor commissioner industrial commissioner and a governor appointed third member to have court powers to inquire into coal pricing and report findings to the legislature if a special session is convened.
Cardinal Dougherty departed Rome for Paris and will sail from Cherbourg on April 6 arriving in New York on April 16. The journey marks a visit to the United States with his travel dates confirmed.
Des Moines Iowa March 31 Appropriation bills captured attention as the legislature neared noon. Senate actions included boosting the Knickerbocker fund for animal tuberculosis to 250000 and advancing an omnibus expense bill. The house trimmed state fair grounds improvements from 19000 to 44000 while altering per capita support for institutions. Senate panel urged cutbacks to education and board of control funding by 1641600 and 350000 respectively from their requests.

Baltimore March 21 Roman Catholic rites paid tribute to James Cardinal Gibbons, one of America's oldest church workers. Archbishop Bonzanano presided at a pontifical requiem mass at the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary as seminarians chanted Gregorian music rarely heard outside the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
Judge Ben B. Lindsey of the Juvenile court must appear in Criminal court to hear the execution order of sentence for contempt of court. He faces a $500 fine and a year in jail as an alternative. The Supreme Court refused review, and jail arrangements are made.
An interurban train collided with an automobile near McKinney Texas killing three children of Mr and Mrs Oliver Sorenson of Holland Iowa. Sorenson’s brother Clarence, the driver, was probably fatally injured. The Sorensons had spent the winter in San Benito Texas and were traveling with another car behind.
County Superintendent Mrs Nancy Bell reports packets of lettuce carrots onions beets and tomato seeds received from Congressman H M Towner will be shared with rural school pupils. Not enough seeds to supply all children. distribution limited to available supply.
Fifteen members of the Loyal Workers of the Christian church were entertained yesterday afternoon by Mrs. H. Manatrey at 403 North Pine Street. They quilted and socialized, with refreshments served. Next meeting set for next Wednesday afternoon at an announced location.
Laurel Grove No 16 Woodman Circle members will entertain their lady friends at Mrs H H Hawker 509 South Vine Street tomorrow afternoon. Tomorrow is guest day at the Woodman Circle meeting. Refreshments will be served and a large attendance of members and their friends is requested by those in charge.
Detroit March 31 John Thomatiewicz purchased a farm two miles from Lake St Clair for 1500 dollars in cash. Two agents valued the property higher, indicating its greater worth.
K B Mercer visited Afton this afternoon for a brief business trip. Attorney J E Van Dorn from Omaha met with local clients this morning. Dr W A Wright of Thayer joined other out of town callers in Creston this afternoon. Mrs H R Spencer from Mount Rose Colorado arrived for a short visit. J W Harmon of this city travelled to Ellsworth Kansas yesterday to visit his brother R M Harmon. Jeo Townley president of the Reliable Detective Bureau of Omaha was in Creston.
Paris reports say Hungarian troops back Ex-Emperor Charles as he vows to march on Budapest. Vienna notes a proclaimed military dictatorship and General Lehar leading about 15 000 troops to restore Charles. Admiral Horthy’s resignation is unconfirmed while Charles moves toward Buda pest with armies rallying to his cause.
Eugene C Weeks awaited execution for the murder of George Fos dick spent a restful night in Des Moines jail. He sang songs joked with the jailer and wrote a stanza of poetry after the death sentence was pronounced in court.

Today's markets show cattle receipts around 6 000 with beef steers up 10 to 15 higher and top heavy steers at 75. Hog receipts near 16 000 with prices 10 to 25 higher and best 90 to 120 lb pigs at 16.00. Sheep receipts 16 000 with a steady to slightly higher tone. Chicago grain and provisions show May wheat at 138 3/4 cents and pork at 14.75. St Joseph cattle receipts 1 000 with steady to 25 higher prices for cows and heifers and hogs steady to 10 higher. Sheep receipts 450 with steady to strong markets and lambs around 9.30.
A local market listing shows corn four cents, oats thirty two cents, timothy and wild hay prices around fifteen and twelve dollars, straw nine dollars, wheat one dollar eighty, and various clover and timothy seeds. Poultry prices include pegs seventeen cents and hens twenty one cents, with ducks eighteen cents and horse and beef hides priced accordingly.
