Creston ends Ku Klux Klan rule as anti klan ticket led by George D. Newcomb wins in yesterday's city vote. The new administration takes office Monday April 4 for a two year term.
Henry Gaas of Columbus Nebraska and James P Martin former manager announce acquisition of the Strand and Willard theaters in Creston. The two houses will be managed by Martin who will also bring First National Paramount Fox and Universal films. Possession set for April 3 with improvements planned and Harshaw returning to manage the Willard chandlery. Mrs Wadell of Lincoln visiting Creston.
George J. Newcomb was elected mayor by a wide margin, leading a full Citizens' slate that carried all offices. Hood, Trump, Peterson, Reckner, Keehn, McCoy, Bartlett, Porter, Hamilton and Kenney won their respective posts as the Citizens' ticket swept Creston. Total vote about 3,190 with Newcomb's bloc delivering the victory across wards.
Creston mayor elect George D. Newcomb, ill at Excelsior Springs Missouri, telegrams the Advertiser thanking Creston citizens for their confidence in the Citizens ticket in yesterday's city election and pledging to fulfill the city's obligations to the best of his ability.
The Citizens ticket won the mayoral race and seven aldermen seats, giving control for two years. New mayor to appoint police chief, clerk, street commissioner, and city solicitor, while fire and police changes navigate civil service rules. Light signals showed Newcomb victory with a white beacon as Burt’s loss confirmed.

U S officials urged strong measures to prevent repeat violence in nationalist territory. A State Department cable dated March 27 cited rising risk at Wuhu and two confirmed attacks on American women. Reports from Rear Admiral Hough warned of growing danger and premeditated harassment. London dispatches note Cantonese gunfire on American ships near Nanking on Lion Hill.
Creston schools plan a two day vacation Thursday and Friday as the South Central Iowa Teachers Association convenes with attendees from nine counties and four states. G. E. DeWolf says attendance may equal last year’s four to five hundred. Francis G. Blair will give the Thursday evening address. operetta excerpts will open the program.
Washington reports that American forces in China will not be merged with the troops of other great powers. The policy underscores U.S. insistence on independent operation and alliance limits in the region.
Kamao Araki, officer in charge of the guard at the Japanese consulate in Nanking during the outrages last week, tried to kill himself aboard the Tone this morning. He is in grave condition, reportedly burdened by responsibility for the events at the consulate where seven Bluejackets guarded the scene.
Creston Nobbies host Arispe tonight for the season’s last home game. The Nobbies have fourteen wins in seventeen games with one close loss to Arispe already this season.
A grand opera program will air Tuesday March 29 at 8 p.m. central on WJZ with other stations offering music at various times including KPO 10 p.m. central, Ada Waldrop organist at KTHS 9 p.m. central, and WEAF 8 p.m. central Eveready Hour with KYW 10 p.m. central classical and WCAU 11 p.m. central revue.
The Nobby team features former high school and college captains. Clarence Collings and Leo Meridith led Creston in 1924 and 1923 respectively, with other notable captains from Cromwell Irwin Simpson and Creston. Joe Strance, Nobbies center and captain, also captained Creston in 1925. Tonight's game starts at 7:45.
William Truman, 84, died at 2 55 PM at his home 622 New York avenue after a period of poor health. Born in Wheeling West Virginia he moved to Creston 46 years ago and resided there since. He is survived by four daughters Mrs Fivecoat of Murray Mrs Tramp Mrs David and Mrs Rodacker all of Creston. Funeral arrangements pending.
A G Hosier aged 78 died this afternoon at 3 25 at his home 613 Wet Mills street after a winter of poor health. He was a Civil War veteran. He is survived by his wife and several children. Funeral arrangements and further details will be announced.
Beulah Cline daughter of Mrs. O G Davenport died at 3 this morning at the family home twelve miles south of Creston. She was sixteen and had been ill ten days. Funeral services set for 2 o clock Thursday at Grove Chapel cemetery.
The Bellingham Herald begins 24 hour publication on March 14 after absorbing the Bellingham Reveille. The Reveille had been the morning paper and both papers were served by Associated Press leased wire. The Monrovia Messenger paused last week and Monrovia News will carry its evening circulation.
In Creston the latest election delivers the most sweeping majority in history, aimed at uniting the community and ending years of factions and dissension. Citizens express hope the result marks the final split.
Virginia Josephine Frazier two years old was kidnapped in Tennessee. Frank Baskett 47 a former policeman and Mrs Annie Thominson were arrested on kidnapping charges. Miss Johnny Peale 17 questioned as possible involvement. The infant was recovered after ransom paid by the father and a bill proposing death penalty for kidnapping was debated in the senate.
The Iowa History committee of the Iowa Federation of Women's clubs announces Iowa History Week from April 18 to 23. Lillian Cary of Dubuque chairs the program with members from Creston to Des Moines and advisory members from Wapello to Clermont. One thousand clubs plan events with Rotary Kiwanis and Lions support and school programs statewide.
