Iowa House approves the Bergman gas tax measure to raise about 4.75 million dollars annually for highway improvements with the Senate already having passed it. Dilty of Polk county and Lichty of Blackhawk abstained from voting.
Sturgis South Dakota March 28 The Faith 8 D school board has authority to expel high school students who leave during Bible reading Judge James McNenny ruled in A Finger vs the school board The mandamus suit sought reinstatement for Catholics of Faith who were dismissed for refusing to stay in the room during Bible reading The judge ruled the school board has sovereign authority over school discipline and can use any Bible version it deems appropriate.
San Francisco dates report that Dorothy Ellingson the confessed matricide will not plead guilty to murder. Defense attorney Alexander Moslin says the offer to plead manslaughter was never accepted and cites lack of premeditation or malice. The father and brother oppose a murder plea and the trial is expected to continue.
The body of Admiral George Dewey was moved from Arlington National Cemetery to Bethlehem Chapel at the National Cathedral. Full military honors were given with marine detachments and navy bands, as Mrs. Dewey was escorted by Secretary Wilbur.
Protests accompanied both measures as the executive held a public hearing on them yesterday. The long and short haul measure reportedly gained railroad commission approval before the executive signed it. A condolence resolution for George Hammill, father of Governor John Hammill, was adopted by the senate and sent to the governor after his death yesterday in Britt. Funeral services are planned for tomorrow.
Chicago March 28 Charges of blackmail intimidation and bribery were cited as William D. Shepherd sought renewed bail in the murder case. An affidavit claimed Farman confessed to teaching how to kill McClintock with typhoid germs was coerced by blackmail. The defense pledged protection for Shepherd and noted arrests of Clark and others as witnesses.
A grass fire burned about a half acre on vacant North Division street lots Friday evening, extinguished by firefighters using coats. Alarm at 5.15. Also Friday night thieves stole six large hides and four truck tires from a Johnson Co truck at a slaughter house east of the city. one hide was missed. General Sheridan council Knights of Columbus Creston to hold Memorial service Sunday with church mass and an address in the afternoon.

Mrs Sarah McCue wife of Mike McCue was acquitted by a district court jury after testifying she accompanied her husband to the DeYoung grocery store only to dissuade him from robbing it. The couple was arrested at the store.
Police Lt. Blaur investigates an anonymous phone threat to Morgan A. Collins over aiding in the Shepherd prosecution. Judge Olson states they cannot frighten him.
In Chicago March 28 Shepherds lawyer filed an affidavit by William Scott Stewart alleging C C Farman, whose confession is key to William Shepherd’s murder case, abused a woman in his science school and that she died. The document claims the body was turned over to a laboratory for disposal as Shepherd seeks bail reconsideration.
Keith Pickett quits to defeat Mayor Keith and leaves a three way field. John Rhine Myron Burt and Ed Keith remain in the mayoral race as Pickett urges support for a single candidate to restore Creston’s affairs and youth prospects.
John H. Wilson 45 a Omaha resident who believed his first wife dead returned after 11 years and after remarriage in 1919. His second wife Jennie A Wilson sued for divorce last February. He shot himself in an Omaha hotel after failed conciliations.
A Creston fire at the Wherry and Joneson garage on West Montgomery caused $2,000 in damage to three autos. In the city election Ed G. Smeltzer won the mayoralty with a slate of officers including W. F. Busby and G. W. Hicks. An unofficial census counted 70 traveling salesmen in town, with average expenditures of about $100,000 yearly. The piece also notes Easter celebrations, baseball league talk, a spring style show in Afton, a wedding, and the Temple Grand theater reopening after upgrading projection gear.
The board of church extension of the Des Moines conference of the Evangelical church was elected at the morning session. Members include Rev. Charles Pickford Hubbard Rev. J. W. Davis LeMars Rev. F. R Balkely Zearing G. H W. Slake LeMars and C Strand Manley. The conference closes Sunday with a sermon by Bishop T. Mose of Harrisburg Pa. Zion church presented a bouquet of 50 roses in honor of its golden Jubilee.
The Creston high school mixed glee club won first place in the mixed chorus class at the Stuart district music contest held Friday night. The 12 boys and 12 girls, led by Miss Harriet Goodwell, earned eligibility for the Cedar Rapids state contest in May. Stuart, Guthrie Center and Adel were among other entrants. Stuart received a silver cup for overall points.
County Engineer Guy Perry reports all primary roads in Union County are in first class condition while county roads have been dragged. This week’s warm weather and strong winds over the past three days improved highways and nearly eliminated soft spots.
Des Moines March 28 roads statewide reported in good condition by the Des Moines Automobile club in the weekly road report issued today.
Opal Stickels of Cromwell took second place in the pre-district high school declamatory contest at Lenox Friday night. It was Stickels first defeat this season after winning the county four-school and sub-district events.
Senator Burton K. Wheeler of Montana appeared in the District of Columbia Supreme Court and furnished $1000 bail on conspiracy charges connected with offshore land permits. Bond provided by a bonding company. counsel Charlie A. Douglas accompanied Wheeler.
Osceola high school debating team defeated Estherville last night by a score of 8 to 0. The victory advances Osceola to represent western Iowa in the state high school debating contest at Iowa City.

Candidates boast confidence while registration extends to those out of city or moved since November. results expected to reflect strong mobilization and a re Submitted band tax proposal divides opinion though supporters push it forward.
Pleasant Plain School pupils under Miss Bernice Bender presented a program and exhibit on Wednesday. The display included manual training sewing product maps penmanship biographies history poems letters calendars and posters. First prizes went to Evelyn Jane Frahes and Emma Stoll with second to Lendal Snyder and Dorothy Francis.
