The United States railway labor board dismissed appeals for increased wages filed last fall by fifteen railway labor unions against sixty seven short lines nationwide. The board ruled the decision not to revert to the old scale does not affect wages currently in effect or any wage agreements between carriers and employees.
Chicago. Hyde Park Post No. 34 of the American Legion has taken over the 1883 Chicago World's Fair Fine Arts building for an indoor rifle range. The range fits a 100 yard line plus shorter distances, aiming to keep veterans in target trim.
Cedar Falls March 28. Special. The Iowa Association of Economists and Sociologists will meet April 1 and 2 at Iowa State Teachers College. Des Moines March 28 A seven member sifting committee of senators was named by Lieutenant Governor Hammil to review all senate bills after Wednesday. Senator Smith of Madison county named chairman. The senate declined to dissolve the Temple of Justice building fund and adopted a resolution preventing transferring 700000 dollars to the general fund. A bill legalizing cigarette sales to buyers twenty one or older with licenses and fees was favorably reported and will be acted on Wednesday.
A Commerce Employment Bureau organized by University of Iowa School of Commerce students aims to place graduates in positions matching their training. Led by Robert G. Paramore with Erling Larson as business manager and Paul W. Penningroth as secretary treasurer, the bureau will collect applicant records and share them with prospective employers and faculty.

Mrs. William Wallace Lanahan of Baltimore, expert horsewoman, died from brain concussions after a fall at a hunt. She had been unconscious for ten days following the incident.

Two sacks of mail were stolen from the Chicago and Eastern Illinois station in Benton. The theft occurred after the station closed at 11 PM and the postmaster refused to discuss the incident. It could not be ascertained whether the pouches contained any particular mail items.
John K. Mahon president of the Samuel Mahon Company wholesale grocers, and son of the late Major Samuel Mahon, died after shooting himself at his Ottumwa home. The death followed a two year illness and a physical breakdown from Red Cross service in world war I and the flu epidemic. He left a wife and three children.

Rome March 28 Pope Benedict celebrated the Easter mass in the Sala Matilda chapel for diplomats accredited to the Vatican. He distributed communion to the attending diplomats, while papal household members were also present. Cardinal Dougherty received greetings from America and presided at Mass at the American College.

Vernon Grant, the first drowning victim of the season in the Calumet region, died when cramps seized him while swimming in the East Chicago canal at Hammond Indiana. He disappeared before several companions and his body was recovered yesterday.
