Baltimore March 23 Cardinal Gibbons passed a restless night, according to his secretary. Physicians reported a good pulse and no immediate danger unless something unforeseen occurs, though his heart action remained weak and his temperature low.
In White Plains New York on March 23 Mrs Anna Stillman was charged as the mother of an illegitimate child by an Indian guide, a claim raised in the divorce suit brought by James A. Stillman president of the National City Bank. The allegation covers 1916 to 1919 and was presented in court as part of fees and alimony arguments.
Omaha Neb March 25 The principal of Central High School announced an investigation to identify those responsible for branding the initials of a school fraternity on the foreheads of Karl Marland 15 and Arthur Williams 16 who were initiated last night. The youths refused to name their attackers. The branding caused notable pain but is not expected to cause permanent disfigurement.
Des Moines Ia March 23 A compromise on the Dodd bill to license sale of cigarets to adults has been worked out by the house committee on police regulations and will likely be reported later today. The bill would permit sale to those 20 or older and curb minor access with bonds city permits injunctions and direct fines.
Lanett Alabama reports W Mendith aged 78, Civil War veteran, shot in the eye at Vicksburg on July 1 1863. He coughed up the bullet weighing about one ounce from his head and remains in usual good health.

Paris March 23 The board of directors of the American hospital in Paris has bought a new building near the present location, sufficient for a hospital of a hundred beds with modern appointments, replacing the current thirty two bed facility. Architect C Knight is drawing plans. Building funds total 7 000 000 francs with an endowment of 4 300 000 francs, largely from the United States.

Lloyd Schuler, 21, shot and killed Will iam Matusch on a farm near Manchester Iowa. After the slaying Schuler fled with his employer's kin in the car to West Wahson. He later wrote a letter to Delaware county sheriff claiming self defense and threatening further harm if the family spoke. A nationwide search is underway.
Milwaukee March 23 Mrs Clera Powers an inmate of the Wauwatosa asylum for ten years refused a 100000 bequest from a brother. Probate records showed an estate of 200000. She dismissed the inheritance as “All rot” and said she never had a brother and will not take the money, preferring to trade in stocks.
Des Moines reports Senator D. E. Kimberly of Scott county is likely to champion the Lake bill legalizing boxing when it comes up in the Senate Friday. Only about eighteen of fifty senators are said to favor the American Legion backed measure as others push for support before the roll call.
Martin Carver, 42, a Deepwater Massachusetts coal miner, entered the Third Presbyterian Church at Ogden Avenue and South Ashland Boulevard yesterday seeking food. The sexton gave him a meal. minutes later he lay on the floor and was taken to the county hospital with injuries not yet updated.
A prisoner on Guatemala's death row carved a delicate Christ head on a bean the size of a silver dollar in 1895.
