Des Moines reports predict cooler weather after a sudden night drop from 90 to 58 across the state. Davenport led rainfall at 1.66 inches with Fort Dodge Atlantic and Clorinda among measured spots. high winds caused minor damage to outbuildings and trees. Neola relief workers moved to shelter as last week’s storm left families homeless and Camp Dodge equipment assisted.
The note from UK Foreign Secretary Austen Chamberlain to France's Briand states Britain guarantees the Rhine frontier per Versailles and would consider war over violations. Britain offers to deploy its entire military, naval, and air forces to France and Belgium to assure Rhine security, but not Germany's eastern borders with Poland and Czechoslovakia.
The Supreme Court today declared the New York Criminal Anarchy Act valid and constitutional. The decision affirmed Benjamin Gitlow's conviction while Justices Holmes and Brandeis dissented, with Holmes arguing Gitlow’s 1920 Socialist Manifesto posed no immediate danger to the government.

An explosion at West Kentucky coal company's mine number 9 in Sturgis Kentucky entombed 15 men. Company officials reported 130 workers were underground when the blast hit entry number 1, with six men initially trapped and most escaping via other entries.
A wind and rain storm across Union county caused widespread destruction with property losses estimated between 40 000 and 50 000 and possibly higher. Creston area suffered roof damage to structures including a clubhouse, barns, silos and outbuildings, plus downed trees and broken windows. One injury occurred when lightning struck near a Creston man.

Seaplanes F-18 and F-22 are aboard for air reconnaissance and potential rescue. Lieut. Holm plans to scout along the Arctic ice edge northeast of Dane’s Island to reach Amundsen’s nearest land.
The dirigible Los Angeles, delayed by engine trouble, turned back to its hangar after failing to land in fog near Cleveland. Arriving over Lakehurst at 1:40 a.m. EST, the craft had departed 24 hours 12 minutes earlier for the Nordic American centennial in Minneapolis and St. Paul where President Coolidge was to speak. Secretary Wilbur cited the incident as evidence against relying solely on gasoline engines for national defense and said it was unclear if the Los Angeles or Shenandoah would resume Minnesota flights.
A west bound Chesapeake and Ohio freight train overturned near Converse Indiana killing eight Black track layers and one trainman. Initial reports listed eighteen injured and possible higher fatality toll as ambulances removed dead from the wreck.

London reports from Associated Press indicate officials view the Chinese situation as more serious due to spreading strikes in various provinces. No word on missionaries, while demonstrations persist in Peking Shanghai and Canton though utilities still operate.
The second panel of jurors broke during the William D. Shepherd murder trial as it entered its fourth week. Judge Lynch excused William Korp by agreement, leaving six jurors sworn. The panel was completed again when Fort Blawert Jr., a hoisting end uecer, was accepted by both sides.
C W Hickok of 708 West Montgomery Street was elected grand counselor at the Iowa state grand council meeting in Council Bluffs. Delegates from Creton council included Cummings Westerman and Hickok. Stormy weather reduced attendance. Glen Haynes spoke for the Iowa Good Roads association and a resolution endorsing its highway program was adopted.
Mayor C. S. Ranger and Mrs Ranger moved into their new El Monte home on Tyler Street. The Spanish style bungalow features a patio entrance, rounded living room lines, a tiled fireplace with molding scenes, and a living room den dining area with two bedrooms and a kitchen.
The Supreme Court holds a federal district court cannot compel a person living in another district to appear as a witness before the railroad labor board. D B Robertson of Ohio, head of the firemen and enginemen, challenged Chicago jurisdiction after being ordered to testify in Chicago.
L. J. Nickle, Union County farm bureau agent, reports crops look up from last year. Corn is improving, with minimal drought damage and normal replanting. Oats and wheat are weak, hay fair but not as bright, bluegrass seed may fail, pastures recover with rains, alfalfa yields range from one to one and a half tons per acre.
Officers with a search warrant raided Elite restaurant on North Elm Street at 8 30 Sunday night. Claude Ridout and Hazel Ridout were charged with illegal possession of liquor and posted 500 bonds each. Four officers and a federal agent recovered a gallon of liquor and four half pint bottles beneath rear door area.
In Chicago a Kaufman hat shop clerk was held up and $3,000 stolen. In Cleveland two burglars slugged and bound August Richter a watchman at a downtown clothing store, knocked the safe, and escaped with about $10,000. Richter possibly suffered a fractured skull.
