Chicago reports the government takes control of freight traffic at midnight while railroads form new unions. Montreal signals 40 000 strikers may walk out, yet Baltimore talks between B and O officials and shopmen show potential local settlements and goodwill as a hopeful sign.
Clinton Indiana July 26 Associated Press governor Kendall notified a conference with Mayor Cowles Sheriff Ramsay U S Marshal Guy Brewer and Northwestern Railroad official Hammill to plan increased guards and deputy sheriffs and marshals protecting railroad property in Clinton.
A report from Detroit claims 400 000 maintenance of way workers threatened to strike over eastern railroads forming company unions to replace strikers and guards. Chicago notes F F Grable denying a 400 000 member strike and says negotiations with the labor board proceed satisfactorily.
Chicago July 26. Associated Press. Sigmund Rice marked the soles of his wife's shoes to detect if she went out, claiming it as proof in divorce proceedings. The wife filed for divorce presenting this charge as a key incident.
W J Smith of Afton township was working under his truck by a lantern when the lantern ignited leaking gas. The garage shed truck and farm machinery burned, but Rain saved the extensive farm plant. Loss put at 2000 dollars.

Manila reports that George Logan, U S commerce agent, cabled Secretary Hoover offering Philippine semi anthracite coal to ease the U S coal and railroad emergency. He said 20 000 tons could be shipped monthly if a handling and shipping organization and available vessels are supplied. He is consulting with nine operators to plan contingencies.
London reports Capt Edward Garstin waiting for guidance from his Chicago sister Mrs Lillian Haines at 1604 Ashland Ave as Edward Garstin Smith lies paralyzed in Hotel Cosmo. Reginald Smith remains unheard. Mr Smith improves slightly and eats a little. Garstin notes Mr Smith is a British subject.
The tanker Charles Braley, en route from Tampico to Baltimore, was destroyed by fire in the Gulf of Mexico early today. The 30 crew members abandoned ship. the freighter Genese stood by to rescue them as the vessel sank.
Page County rural schools announce commencement July 28 with Congressman H. M. Towner delivering the address. County superintendent Agnes Samuelson has been in Boston for the national educational meeting.
New York July 26 Baron James A De Rothschild heir to the French banking family is accused by Marie Forquet of promising marriage after she came from France last spring and then refusing to wed. The suit seeks $500000 in damages.
Des Moines reports President Joe Morris of the Iowa district United Mine Workers says there is no chance Iowa miners will meet operators to negotiate a wage scale. He will reply to the operators' resolution once he receives formal notice, insisting there is not the slightest possibility of a meeting.
Paris July 26 Allied ambassadors issue a note demanding destruction of the fire control and naval school at the Kiel canal. Experts say the school is built so it could be turned into a fort, indicating strategic fortification plans.
Two men attacked Ellen Horrigan, 64, in her doorway, then ransacked the house and escaped with between 40 000 and 50 000 dollars in gold believed to be the savings of a lifetime hidden in the residence.
Helen Conklin a 16 year old expert swimmer from Cherokee drowned at Sioux Falls while bathing in the river. She was overcome by cramps.

President Harding accepted the resignation of Elmer Dover of Tacoma Washington as assistant secretary of the treasury in charge of internal revenue at the White House. The move ends a lengthy dispute over administrative control of the internal revenue bureau between Dover and Secretary Mellon and Commissioner Blair.
Cedar Rapids July 26 Associated Press reports Duncan Lowe was arrested for violating the federal injunction against strikers. He was among men who with an aviator flew over railroad shops and dropped inflammatory literature a flyer aircraft incident ends with police action.
Marilynn Miller arrives in Los Angeles to wed Jack Pickford. A crowd of about a thousand gathers at Santa Fe station as the bride, radiant and smiling, is met by Pickford and his mother at San Bernardino and whisked away by limousine. The wedding date of August 1 is expected to move sooner with limited celebrity guests.

A guard from the C B and Q fired on two striking shopmen near Creston injuring C A Blodgett and George McCloud. Sears is jailed on charges while officials discuss disarming guards and deploying deputies to prevent further violence. Blodgett stabilized after surgery. McCloud recovering at home.
Dennison Texas July 26 Five companies of the 142nd Infantry Texas including 275 men detrained and placed the railroad shop district under martial law to protect railroad property. With the troops arrival the striking shopmen moved their picket back 1000 feet.
J. W. Crozier age 67 committed death by own action Tuesday at his daughter Della Crozier’s home. Despondent over two years of illness he improvised a noose from bed straps and hanged himself. He leaves a wife two daughters and a son.
Mrs. Eula McEwen driving alone from Indianola to Lincoln Nebraska missed the viaduct over Rock Island tracks at Adair and fell 51 feet to the ground. She was only jarred by the impact, the car sustained slight damage, and she continued her trip the next day.
Washington July 26 The Inter-State Commerce Commission asked the state railroad commission and public utilities to lend active assistance in the equitable distribution of coal. The AP report notes the request aims to ensure fair allocation during the shortage period and calls for coordination with local agencies.
