Recapture of 19 Illinois jail-breakers at hospital

In Chester Illinois on July 23, nineteen of the forty one escaped prisoners from the state hospital for the criminally insane were recaptured after battering down a steel mesh fence. Two guards were injured and Dr. Frank Stubblefield suffered a fractured arm in the melee. William Jackson, a Black man, was stabbed to death in the general clash, though by a prisoner not a guard as previously reported.

Mildred Madden Dies in Auto Crash on Blue Grass Highway

Mildred Madden an 18 year old Lenox resident died after being struck by a car driven by Ernest Hofer of Lenox on the Blue Grass highway near Stringtown. Hofer also injured and rushed to Greater Community Hospital where he is said to be shaken. witnesses Imogene Madden and Grace Sullivan reported the incident occurred as Madden stepped from a parked coupe. The crash occurred in front of Edward Metz's house. funeral arrangements have not been made.
