Opponents of roads face a voters’ yes for highway bills

Union county voters head to the polls to support a two to one margin for a safe highway program with no tax increase. Supporters say opposition hand-bills misrepresent No. 34 and aim to stall progress despite broad backing for good roads.

Women Golfers Prepare For 1928 Southwestern Iowa Tourney

The 1928 southwestern Iowa women’s golf tournament will be held at Crestmoor club Creston after decisions at Atlantic. Mrs J W Richardson led qualifying with 90 but lost on the eighteenth green to Miss Clapp of Harlan. Seven Crestmoor entrants competed, with Mrs Gault advancing in the main flight and others in consolation rounds.

Cow Testing Plan Told To Lorimor Herd Owners

Farmers at a Lorimor area meeting planned to form a 20 mile herd owner association to audit each cow’s profit. KE N Schultz and L A Nordhausen outlined the plan with extension staff, showing monthly tester visits and member fees of 3.50 to 4.00. A Creston proposal for a central milk plant was discussed but not decided.

Alfalfa Soil Test Plots Harvested Near Creston

The county farm east of Creston cut alfalfa test plots for harvest and analysis. M. A. Hauser of Ames will compute results for extension officials. Four varieties Grimm Cossack Dakota 12 and Nebraska seed tested with four treatments.

Oats Yield at Courter Farm Near Creston

Oats threshed at the Jesse R Courter farm averaged 68 bushels per acre this week. Nearby fields yield from 40 to 45 bushels per acre. The Courter farm lies in the Zion community about 10 miles northeast of Creston.

Union County to Add Separate Camp at State Fair

Union County will have a separate camp section at the state fair this year announced by county agent L. A. Nordhausen. Many families plan to camp and can arrange tents and sites by notifying the agent before August 10.

LABR VOTE PROMOTES LOCAL LABOR FOR ROAD WORK

Advocates of Good Roads urge approval of paving primary road No 384 across Union county arguing at least half the cost is labor and benefits local wages. Engineers estimate total cost for primary road No 34 between 700000 and 750000 with 350000 to 375000 spent on labor locally over two years. Continued on Page Eight.

Union County Good Roads Election Set for Tomorrow

A special good roads election is scheduled in Union County for tomorrow with polls open 8 am to 7 pm statewide and 7 am to 7 pm in Creston. Voters should use their regular polling places. Creston residents may call Elks club headquarters at 72 for a ride. A yes vote promises immediate surfaced roads with no tax increase, while a no vote could delay years.

Glove Plant Plays Big Role in Local Economy

Henderson Glove company plans fifty thousand dozen pairs of cotton flannel gloves and mittens totaling 1 200 000 this year. Under Fred Henderson of Creston the outfit grows from a small shop to a major producer with Masterbilt trademarks. Dyeing and shrinking create long wearing quality with firmer thicker flannel, and 85 styles are offered. Daily output averages 200 dozen pairs employing 25 workers. Continued on Page.

Sheriff Collings Fractures Wrist in Car Backfire Incident

Sheriff Frank Collings suffered a slight fracture of the left wrist yesterday when a car back-fired as he cranked it. He now wears splints on his forearm. Local ISU graduates in the southwest plan a reunion and picnic at Atlantic on Sunday chaired by Joseph O. Fudge. A religious service, basket dinner, short talk, music, and visiting hour are scheduled.

Henry county approves 9000000 bond for primary road paving

Henry county voters approved a 9.0 million bond to pave primary roads including No 34 linking to the east coast. The measure carried 3283 to 1455, expanding a hard surfaced Burlington Des Moines route and tying Union county’s possible east coast connection to the statewide program.

One Hundred Forty Attend Dodge Club Banquet

One hundred forty people attended the first annual banquet of the Dodge Helpers a girls' club in Dodge township at the Dodge Center church. The Four-H inspired event featured a three course dinner and green and white souvenirs. Speakers included Lois Ruckman Ivan Parrott and others. Plans were made for an annual meeting to promote junior club work in rural areas.

Arrangements set for Floyd Miller Creston auto dealer to host three nation wide radio programs Saturday night promoting new Buick models. Four Creston residents left yesterday for the Fern Iowa Baptist assembly in Iowa Falls to be in session for two weeks. More are planning to go next week. Those who left yesterday were L. E. Kivett Miss Mable Scherer Miss Jenette Grinnell and Mrs Kirk Hawk. They were accompanied by a Corning girl.

Car Wreck Near Greenfield Involving Hog

Mr and Mrs Edwin Harris and their child escaped serious injury when their car collided with a hog three miles north of Greenfield. The wreck occurred Sunday as they returned from Greenfield and demolished the car. Harris sustained cuts on the legs while Mrs Harris and the baby suffered bruises.
