Montana Senator Wheeler accepts the vice presidential nomination on the La Follette Independent ticket. He attacks both major parties, pledges to support progressive aims, and opposes candidates tied to Big Money while urging alignment with Robert M. La Follette.
Senator Burton K Wheeler of Montana, a prosecutor for the Dougherty committee, announced his acceptance of second place in LaFollette's presidential drive. He had earlier said he would not accept the designation but yielded after urging from LaFollette and advisors. A LaFollette group committee visited him in conference yesterday.
Des Moines braces for the Iowa Republican convention with leaders arriving and debates shaping the gubernatorial race. John Hamill Glenn C Haynes and J H Anderson emerge as top contenders while W J Burbank J D Buser and A J Banks trail in projected support as ballots begin after platform adoption and chair selection.
Five people died when their car plunged 50 feet from a bridge into the Arkansas River near Buena Vista Colorado. Byron Tipton age 36 Ruth Skeels 26 Billy Tipton 10 Catherine Tipton 8 and Jack Tipton 6, all of Florence, were killed. Mrs Tipton and an infant were injured. the mother and child escaped the wreck.
Belgrade July 19 Nicola P Pachitch submitted to the king the resignation of the cabinet and urged an election. He had organized the present cabinet May 21 after resigning April 12. Pachitch said he would accept the nomination and prepare a formal country statement.
H G Matthews the British inventor of the so called death ray arrived in New York denying aims to sell the device to the US government. He insisted the term death ray was a misnomer calling it an electric beam and claimed the weapon could destroy a city like New York or paralyze entire armies if developed.
Two air mail planes were delayed at Carlisle landing field near Des Moines by bad weather. Pilot Garrison, en route from Chicago to Omaha, landed at 10 o clock as rain and conditions postponed his flight. Pilot Wagner, also Chicago to Omaha, was forced to suspend due to rain. Both waited for instructions from Omaha at noon. Garrison narrowly avoided disaster when his plane narrowly missed an elevator tower.
Associated Press forecast for the week starting Monday calls for scattered showers and thunderstorms in the Upper Mississippi area, with temperatures near normal or above in the region. Southern Rockies and plateau areas are expected to be generally fair and warmer.
Des Moines reports Governor Kenndall will submit the federal constitutional amendment proposal to the extra session convening Tuesday. Labor officials, seeking delay until fall, expect the measure may not be acted on and will be re submitted for fall discussion.

In Elkader Iowa Mrs Henry Taake died after a firearm discharged when her husband tried to fix a shotgun. Taake had attempted to shoot a mink earlier that morning and returned to the house with the loaded gun, which fired as he oiling and attempting to break the weapon.
A July heat wave in France and Belgium was broken by violent rains causing shipping damage and loss of life. In the Channel two French yachts signaled distress and were aided by tugs. Twenty Ostend fishing smacks are missing with fears all lost. twenty six bodies have washed ashore and ten more boats are missing from Portsmouth.
Unanimous Chamber of Commerce vote orders a five member committee to study establishing a Creston milk condensing plant. Residents discuss pros and cons including markets, county dairy potential, infrastructure, and the need for good roads before courting a large company to locate here.
Washington July 19 The average family expenditure for food rose between May 15 and June 15 in 44 representative cities while declines were recorded in seven. The food price index advanced about one percent for the month and showed a two month change down 1.13 percent.
Jack Coffey a former Des Moines and Denver manager in the Western league has been secured by the Peoria club to manage the Decatur Three Eye league team for the remainder of the season. He left today for Danville to take charge in the final game of the series there.
London July 19 The inter allied conference committee unanimously adopted a plan to insure investors in the German loan priority on all German resources if Germany defaults under the Dawes scheme. It also preserved the rights of nations signing the Versailles treaty, a step seen as paving the way to a broader Dawes agreement and allowing potential separate French action.
