The American airmen landed at Lebourget field Paris at 4 46 pm escorted by French planes and greeted by Laurent Egnac and officials. Lieut Lowell Smith led the landing, exhausted yet triumphant after 18 035 miles in 118 days with 239 hours of flight.
The Olympic track and field championships produced 13 new Olympic records and eight world records as Americans dominated with seven records. Finland’s Nurmi and Ritola set four records for their two man team, while Australia and Great Britain added one each. United States led the points tally with 255, followed by Finland and Great Britain.
Des Moines July 14 authorities joined city police in a county wide campaign against glaring headlights. Deputy Sheriff Ball said patrolmen will watch county highways nightly for motorists using bright lights that blind others and endanger safety. He cited silver drivers and romantic drivers as major offenders and urged courtesy to reduce accidents.
Mrs. J N Langfit wife of J N Langfit prominent in regional politics died at home in Greenfield after a stroke of paralysis. Surviving are her husband four children and she was active in P E O and D A R circles. Funeral arrangements to be announced with services expected Wednesday.
Senator La Follette of Wisconsin meets with political advisors in Washington to hash running mate options and radio broadcasting plans. The Progressive campaign group will confer Friday on campaign matters while La Follette remains in the capital until a final platform is prepared.
Nearly 900 people were taken into custody or given summons in Chicago over 48 hours as part of the police safety drive. Most detainees face court today on speeding violations and related traffic offenses.
West Liberty Iowa July 14 state agents from the justice investigation bureau took charge of the search for Orton Ferguson of Atlanta Michigan tourist slain in a local tourist park. They seek Gabe Simmons named in the coroner jury verdict as the slayer. Bloodhounds from Waterloo joined the hunt and locals aided in the wide manhunt.
Des Moines police search the Negro quarter for a man matching the West Liberty description of the killer of Orton Ferguson. Officials describe him as a light colored Negro with Indian features and two prominent gold teeth.
In Muscatine on July 14 a man matching Gabe Simmons, sought for the Orton Ferguson murder in West Liberty, was seen. Sheriff R J Wiley aims to post a reward and a citywide search proceeds. Deputy Donovan and Constable Fleming lead a posse following a tip on a vehicle scene, as authorities pursue suspects.
Two masked men robbed a Standard Oil filling station in Independence of about $200 in cash at 9 30 p m. They escaped in a roadster. Attendant Sunny T W Moody offered no clues beyond a bare description of the robbers.
The Supreme Court of the District of Columbia sustains six of ten counts in Harry F. Sinclair contempt indictment. The court finds six questions about contributions and related matters not pertinent and orders Sinclair to plead again in 20 days. The ruling also addresses the authority to compel testimony in inquiries.
Burlington temporarily cedes its Mississippi Valley league position after a stormy meeting with President Mike Sexton in Rock Island. The issue centers on alleged umpire discrimination, with Burlington appealing the league decision while a meeting will air the dispute. If forced out, Burlington forfeits about 1300 in dues and guaranteed money.

Augusta Kansas reports the recovery of five bodies from the night storm wreckage. Brigadier General Charles A. Martin of the Kansas National Guard announced the fatalities. Three unidentified bodies were recovered from an oil field ghanty southeast of Augusta and another from near the railroad yards. Many seriously injured were taken to Wichita for treatment as the storm damaged businesses and residences. oil fields between Augusta and Eldorado also sustained damage.
Gov Charles W Bryan arrives in Omaha en route to Lincoln for Democratic vice presidential nomination. Two thousand attendees give a great ovation as he declines to discuss politics until formal notification.
The Prince of Wales opened the International Advertising convention in Wembley London to a 4500 strong crowd of delegates including American attendees who cheered and stampeded the platform for 10 minutes. Frank Kellogg followed with praise of advertising and the forthcoming London conference promising a new economic life.
A Burlington inspection engine collided with a closed truck carrying seven on a crossing near La Platte station. Two men died Mike Freyer and John Bogatz. Five were injured including Bernice Freyer and Mrs Mike Freyer. N C Allen and others were hurt as occupants were thrown into the muddy right of way.
Two people died in separate accidents in Davenport on Sunday. Mrs Carey Kroeger, 30, was fatally injured after being crushed while trying to board a moving train. Orland Smith, 28, of Chicago, was crushed when his car was caught between an elevator and the basement ceiling as a freight elevator ascended.
Union county farm bureau agent L. J. Nickle reports a week of usable rain and warming forecasts. Corn growth is strong but needs hot days to close gaps from a backward season. Oats are being cut and fields in shock. Wheat is expected normal and pastures remain good despite flood and wireworm losses.
Ottawa reports preliminary figures from the bureau of statistics estimating the current Canadian wheat crop at 318,640,009 bushels. The prior year yield stood at 474,199,000 bushels.

Iowa valuation for taxation postponed subject to executive council call. State Treasurer Burbank and State Auditor Haynes busy with republican gubernatorial campaigns and Secretary Clark retiring July 22, delaying valuations until after the state republican convention.
Special Master E J Kelly announced the sale of the Keokuk and Des Moines railroad, held under lease by the Chicago Rock Island and Pacific, will occur soon to satisfy foreclosures by New York bondholders. Rock Island expected to bid, plan of refinancing unclear. Harry F Sinclair posted a $5000 bond to assure Washington appearance in a U S government conspiracy case.
