Peoria police say four bandits attacked night watchmen Jack Szold and Nick Hunt during a burglary attempt at a manufacturing building. Szold was shot in the stomach while helping Hunt who was wounded at about midnight. The police believe the incident stemmed from inside dope activity.
Mrs. C Stein, wife of a former U S army officer, was arrested in Shanghai for alleged involvement in an arms and ammunition sales plot. Authorities found letters and telegrams in her apartment linking her to the scheme. Her husband is reported as a West Point graduate.
The song Iowa, sung widely at the Shrine convention in Washington and introduced to the president, was brought to Alaska by a group of singers in President Harding's party. The performance occurred in Ketchin Alaska via mail on July 8. The group helped carry the tune through the president's travels.
Otis Elevator and the Globe file a $187 500 suit against the Hotel Randolph after a fatal elevator crash in Des Moines. Victims include Mrs. Richard Hoskins and J and Mitt Harry Hill with five others injured when the lift fell to the ground.

Las Vegas July 13. Carl A. McGee editor of the Albuquerque Tribune was held under bond before Judge Leah on contempt of court charges after publishing an article the judge had forbidden. The publication included material that had come into court and was ordered suppressed.
Premier Witos of Poland refuses neck ties to emphasize his peasant origin though fitted by top Polish tailor. A Warsaw paper started a fund to buy him a tie, raising 1,700,000 marks before he declined the gift and directed the money to the Red Cross as "The Necktie of M. Witos."
Las Vegas New Mexico July 13 District Judge D J Leahy confronted a letter writer in the contempt case against Albuquerque editor Carl C Magee. He called the writer a dirty cowardly reprobate and invited him to face the court, but the author did not appear in the courtroom.
London July 13 The legislation restricting intoxicating liquor to those under 18 gains final approval after a 257 to 10 vote. The measure, known as the Lady Astor law, now awaits Royal assent and enforcement steps.
One person was killed and 30 injured when a Memphis train on the Southern railroad derailed two miles east of Larkinsville Alabama early today. The incident occurred near nearby Memphis Tennessee with authorities investigating the wreck.
Four University of Chicago students were detained by police after Elsie Campbell the waitress was found dead in front of a student home in Chicago. Ivan B Campbell brother of the deceased is under police surveillance and to be questioned.
