President Harding asks bituminous and anthracite miners to return to work at the wages in effect on April 1 and to work until August 10 while an arbitration board of three UMW members three operators and five public representatives named by the President negotiates a new scale. Respondents expected by tonight.
Uncle Johnny Shell of Greasy Creek Kentucky died at 134 years old claiming to be the world's oldest man. He remembered seeing Daniel Boone and noted Washington’s mourning. Born September 3 1788 in Tennessee he lived quietly until recent years and later traveled, sharing time with his sons William 90 and Albert 70.
The body of John Fitzgerald, 20, of Tulsa Oklahoma, was found at the foot of the Third Flatiron mountain needle one mile west of Boulder Colorado. He had reportedly fallen seventy five feet while attempting to scale the cliff on Green mountain, a hazardous climb.
Washington July 19 The Interstate Commerce Commission issued notice that an investigation into the reasonableness of existing freight rates will begin immediately. A hearing will be arranged later and a plan of procedure prepared.

The 17 year old Keystone telephone operator and wreck heroine of the Winslow Junction crash was located at the Women's Homeopathic Hospital in West Philadelphia by a New Jersey state policeman. She arrived in a daze and will be taken home by her sister Mrs. Mary Feser.
A flood swept through Nogales Arizona and Nogales Sonora yesterday washing out three bridges and flooding thirty business houses. Several Mexican dwellings floated away as arroyo waters four feet deep filled streets in both cities.
Springfield July 10 The full five companies of the 130th Infantry and the Pontiac Company of the 129th with full field equipment have been ordered to Bloomfield. The destination from Bloomfield is withheld to prevent demonstrations on their detraining.
Des Moines police and deputies found the body of J. H Johnson in the basement of a house occupied by Sam Chaetell. Johnson, described as an elderly man, had been beaten to death with a club during a raid related to illicit liquor.
Washington July 10 Associated Press report that coal operators and miners officials adjourned a conference without reaching a deal and planned to take the matter directly to President Harding at the White House for resolution.
In Hoxie Arkansas on July 10 a mob of striking shopmen surrounded about fifty strike breakers. Some were armed as the men were chased out of town after disarming them. The strike breakers had been brought by Missouri Pacific to replace the strikers. They were picked up by a Missouri Pacific train en route to Poplar Bluffs. No violence occurred as the breakers offered no resistance.
Davenport Iowa July 10 a small cyclone blew down trees and disrupted lines and interurban railroad service at Le Claire. Wires poles and telegraph lines were broken and the town faced temporary transportation obstruction.
Wayne B Wheeler will urge extension of the dry act to ban liquor sales on American ships and within three miles at an open hearing before Attorney General Daugherty. He represents the Anti Saloon League and twelve temperance groups arguing enforcement is key to preventing illicit liquor sales at sea.
Washington July 10 Production of corn, the country’s most valuable crop, is estimated at 2 860 000 bushels by the department of agriculture. This is 29 000 000 bushels above the five year average but below last year’s crop.

James J Flannery of a well known Pittsburgh family admitted to slaying his wife Catherine Duffy Flannery on February 23 at their Hazlewood home but was acquitted of murder in Criminal Court yesterday.
The government will appoint special United States Marshals to safeguard property and lives and prevent interstate traffic disruption during the shopmen’s strike. Attorney General Daugherty announced after a conference with President Harding that authority to appoint district marshals has been provided and will be used where needed.
Des Moines report says Joe Cannon aged 52 night watchman at the Standard Oil warehouse was bound and robbed of 158 dollars in cash and 700 dollars in checks last night.
Nadine North a 17 year old from Des Moines says a man she met after arriving by train offered work and drugged her with grape juice. She woke semi conscious on a park bench and identified the house she was taken to. Chas Oddo of that address is held for investigation.
In Clarinda Iowa on July 19 plans are set for a joint debate between Smith Brookhart and Clyde L Herring at the chautauqua on August 10 with both candidates consenting Commander MacNider of the American Legion also slated to speak.
Col A B Enloe, 86, longtime chairman of the Tennessee railroad and public utilities commission, died in Nashville after a lengthy illness. He had been ill since February and was a prominent figure throughout the region.
Cedar Rapids July 10 The Rock Island officials appeal to the government to provide twenty five guards to protect workers from striker interference. The appeal awaits legal action and no strikers or strike breakers are at work. Shopmen begin picketing the company property for the first time. Traveling auditor G H Halsey was struck in the eye by a cinder from a strike breaker.
The post office department reports eighteen bags of U S mail lost with the steamer Egypt sinking. The parcels held mail accumulated in New York from April 29 to May 2.
A new injunction restraining striking shopmen from violence will be served on Perry Council Bluffs and Manila workers. It is signed by Judge Wade and filed at the request of the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul railroad attorney.
Creston Chamber of Commerce heads and members are summoned to the office of Division Superintendent Sadler of the C B Q early Sunday. The proposition to withhold credit from striking shopmen is rejected as a Chamber act and mediation is deferred to union leaders through Chicago. Mayor Keith then swears in members as special deputies to maintain law and order during the strike.
A cyclone devastated St Charles South Dakota with nearly every building damaged or leveled. One man was killed and around twenty injured as property losses reach about 775000. The storm's path was reported ten miles from Benesteel where a dispatch noted the townwide destruction.
Farmers union of Grayson county announced plans to open markets in Sherman and Denison where striking shopmen may buy farm produce at cost. If strikers cannot pay, produce will be provided free.

In Council Bluffs Iowa on July 10 members of the local Iowa National Guard in uniform were seen drifting toward the Armory. Des Moines officials denied any orders had been issued to assemble at the Armory, noting general calm except for unease in Council Bluffs.
Washington July 10 The 21 experts named to prepare the program for the world dairy congress to be held in October 1923 in a major U S city were announced. L A Rogers chairs the overall program committee with C H Eckles heading the education and research subcommittee. Prof M Mortensen and S J Van Kuren are among the associate members.
London reports heavy fog and soot in July with 47 tons of dirt dumped from the air. About 27.5 tons were soluble while 19.5 tons were insoluble grit and tar. Hatmakers now craft summer straw hats in deep black to hide the grime.
