The Fourth of July crowd in Creston exceeded expectations with 20 009 visitors. Local officials believe the strong turnout will boost the Union county fair August 22 to 27 with widespread county and blazed representation and optimism for record crowds.
The Daily Advertiser lauds its Fourth of July coverage in Tuesday's edition crediting S Ray Emerson for organizing prize winner details and thanking subcommittee chairmen for accuracy. A correction notes Burlington railroad miniature train had eight cars and crew, not as described, with stock cars carrying 42 chickens 15 pigs and two calves from Antonio Nastruz of Cresto.
The Daily Advertiser learned a girl dressed as a boy rode as brakeman on the little train, correcting an earlier report that a boy served in the role. Hortense Keck of Creston was omitted from the bathing beauty contest entries list.
Reports of European corn borer invasion in southwestern Iowa proved groundless as examined specimens were the common stalk borer. Experts say the stalk borer will do little more damage as it transitions to the adult stage. One field near Nevinville was destroyed by the stalk borer.

The Creston official reading reached 95 degrees at 1 PM, setting a new summer high in southwestern Iowa. For the past two weeks temperatures had lingered around 90 degrees, with several days at 92 or 93 degrees, making today two degrees hotter than the hottest prior day.
Des Moines reports the corn average rises to knee high in most counties with rain urgently needed in many areas. Heat and drought damage winter and spring crops while hay yields improve. potatoes, gardens, and fruit suffer. Harvest of winter wheat begins in Harrison county. Raspberries and blackberries shrink as strawberry crops shorten in northern Iowa.
County boards in Fremont Fayette Delaware set July dates for special bond elections to fund primary road improvements. Fremont picks July 20, Union July 21, Fayette July 28 for 1.2 million bond proposal. Delaware sets July 21 to fund paving of federal highway 20 and upgrading routes 118 and 116.
A board of supervisors approved a resolution to hold a special road bond election for Union County on July 21. Two members, A Otis and C F Henderson, voted against the date, urging a later election. The board resumed session today to handle routine business.
Warm weather and occasional showers help corn near the normal stage in Union County says L A Nordhausen county farm bureau agent. The crop shows good progress despite some moisture needs with heavy rains reported around Creston and light winds in parts. Oats are ripening with heavy heads while timothy and red clover haying nears completion and alfalfa yields vary but start a strong second crop.

R. C. G. Baker of Kellerton died yesterday at Osceola from injuries suffered days earlier in a car crash on primary road No. 65 near Osceola. He was 44 years old and hurt internally when his car struck the guard rail.
The body of Mrs. William Hofft, 51 years old, who died at Renton Washington, will arrive here tonight. The family formerly lived on South Maple Street here but moved away 10 years ago.
Jersey City July 6 reported steam to be used as motive power for planes. Inventor Gotthard Strohschein proposed an eight passenger all metal steam powered aircraft to fly from New York to Europe in 18 to 20 hours.
London officials report the Church of England assembly approved a proposed revision of the Book of Common Prayer with 517 votes in favor and 133 against. The decision was made in session today.
Charles A Levine, who accompanied Clarence Chamberlin on the Germany flight, intends to fly back to New York with a French pilot once one is found. He spoke at a luncheon with American and British correspondents and said Chamberlin cannot pilot him home due to other engagements. The designated pilot’s name will be announced within days.
Bernt Balchen, who joined Commander Byrd on the north pole flight, plans a U S to Norway crossing in the next year. He aims for New York to Oslo in about 55 hours in an American built plane with four crew. The proposed 4300 mile route would pass Ireland and Scotland with funding sought in Norway or failing that from American investors.
Newark A C C 440 yard relay likely set a world record at the national AAU championships in Lincoln. The Newark quartet passed the baton in the right hand instead of the left, a technique found by coach Carl Anderson to be steadier for an exhausted runner.
A special election in Clarke County on July 6 asks voters to approve bonds totaling 280000 to pave primary roads No 34 and 65. A heavy turnout is expected with opposition focused on Murtay area north of primary No 4 after road relocation.
Burlington yard lighting gets two 60 foot towers with 7 000 watt lamps installed yesterday. Towers placed near Elm street crossing and Cedar street. Lights aimed to illuminate watchmen and tracks for safety at night.
Mrs. Lillian Cochran 27 a widow and mother of two was shot by farm hand Charles Bettinger 40 in Primghar Iowa. She contracted pneumonia and remains hospitalized with injuries to the abdomen and hand while Bettinger killed himself after the shooting. Ray Andrich of Bigelow Minnesota was wounded but is expected to recover.
The Iowa state executive council awarded contracts to Charles Weitz Sons of Des Moines totaling 15,500 dollars for gilding the state house domes. Work begins immediately with lead coating as a base for gold leaf, including all materials and labor. The last gilding price was about 13,000 dollars.
Mrs Ed J Bradley and son Darrel and daughter Dorothy of Chicago arrived for a visit with Mr and Mrs J J Bradley on New York avenue. Mrs Clem Archer and son Everett from Bridgewater passed through en route to Chicago. Mr and Mrs W W Wall and family drove to Ottumwa for a two week vacation. Mr Wall manages the Spurgeon store. Miss Eva Larson and Miss Alma Johnson spent the weekend in Omaha.
Creston junior college launches summer radio program on KENK Shenandoah with college girls quartet led by Dean of Men Prof Vern Sanders. The plan includes an outline of courses and prospects, car-backed broadcast, and enthusiasm for expanding the sophomore year this fall.
Commander Byrd and the America crew visited the Hotel des Invalides and Napoleon's tomb where Capt. Charles Legendre, paralyzed French aviator, walked for the first time since Verdun 1918. Legendre joined Byrd in an emotional moment as tears flowed among witnesses. The party spoke with General Marijaux and Ailes Brisees officials about wounded airmen. Plans for a return to the United States were undecided, with a likely voyage on the Leviathan anticipated.

They had recently joined the state highway commission. No special election will fill their seats unless a special session is called.
Philadelphia Nationals beat the Boston Braves 6 to 4 in the first game of a doubleheader. McQuillan allowed five hits and five runs in the third inning as Boston led 4-0 before Philadelphia rallied. First game score shows Boston 400 000 000 and Philadelphia 003 010 00x.
Railroad officials blame the engineer of the New York Ontario and Western line for failing to obey signals and the open switch in a rear end collision with a switcher freight. Four people died and 28 were injured. Miss Helen Rientop travels to Pacific Junction for a brief visit.
