American Marines breached El Chipote crest in Nicaragua driving Sandino forces into isolation. Major Archibald Young led 400 men to the summit after aerial bombardment killed about 40 rebels. Fortifications and trenches were destroyed as rebels fled.
The Salvation Army budget drive for Creston 1928 begins with a 6:30 pm Monday kickoff banquet at the Elks home, followed by an instruction meeting. About 80 to 100 volunteers will conduct the fund drive, which runs January 31 to February 4, with most solicitation wrapping up by Wednesday night. Local leaders Mayor George D. Newcomb and Legion Commander Cleo Clayton endorsed the effort.

In Mexico City on January 27 police arrested the principal, 16 instructors and eight students of Seminario De Regina along with many teachers from Colegio Josefino and other Catholic schools for alleged propaganda and religious law violations. Some detainees were released after court orders. authorities pledged further action to enforce the constitutionally banned religious teaching.
Charles Malmberg of Des Moines former Creston resident and tailor died yesterday. Funeral services will be held in Des Moines on Saturday morning with interment in Greenfield Saturday afternoon. Surviving are his widow and several children.

Fire last night at 610 North Walnut street caused $500 to $600 in damage to the interior and furniture of Mrs. Tom Stennett’s home. The fire started from an overheated furnace and was discovered by a passer-by around 11 o'clock. no one was at home. The blaze did not breach the roof.

Cuba prepares a grand welcome for Col. Charles A Lindbergh during his goodwill visit. A Cuban government flight squadron will escort him to Columbia field. President Machado and Pan American delegates will greet him and a formal palace reception will follow with a gold medal presentation. Lindbergh’s arrival is set for February 8.
Seven hundred soldiers were posted at Madrid Field to greet Col. Charles A. Lindbergh as he began a 400 mile flight from Cartagena Colombia. An expected crowd of over 25 000 gathered to welcome the famous aviator and a one step composition by Jeronomo Velasco was to be performed during his stay.

L A Nordhausen announced that New Hope township in Union county would become the first to earn a standard farm bureau designation if requirements are met. The plan calls for a man and woman chair, directors from each school district, leaders for four boys and four girls, a secretary, treasurer, and at least 60 percent farmer membership. A Feb 6 meeting will organize, with B L Tyler presiding and Nordhausen addressing cooperative marketing issues.

Hanes backs deepening the Des Moines river as a feeder to the Great Lakes St. Lawrence system with locks to enable navigation and promotes three percent government loans to farmers secured by warehouse receipts to hold crops for better prices.
At the east end sale pavilion yesterday afternoon R. W Stream of Creston sold 20 head of pure bred and grade Jersey cows and heifers at fair prices. Homer F. Harsh, clerk, noted the quality justified better prices than were paid.
