Five men robbed the First National Bank at Crafton near Pittsburgh killing Harold Moss assistant cashier and taking 5000 in cash plus negotiable securities. Police pursued the fleeing robbers who exchanged fire as they escaped. later reports said the haul rose to 11000 in money and 20000 in Liberty bonds.
Des Moines Iowa Jan 27 F J Dunkle of Berwick near Des Moines shot and killed a burglar during an attempted robbery at his store. The burglar, not yet identified, refused to surrender as Dunkle awoke to the break in. Dunkle had reinforced security after twenty two prior robberies in two years and had just slept in the store following a recent break in.
Washington Jan 27 The shipping board and Pacific ports officials will meet February 8 in Washington to discuss organizing a large shipbuilding company and buying government vessels. The project has backing from Herbert Fleishhacker of San Francisco and wide support from Pacific port chambers of commerce and coast shipping interests.
Henie Engle defeated Paul Pricen of Champaign Illinois to retain the Iowa championship in Dubuque on January 27. Engle won the first fall in 52 minutes with a reverse wrist lock and the second in 10 minutes with a head scissors and wrist lock.
Seven bandits in three large trucks seized railroad detective Daniel Mc Garry in Chicago today. They escaped after a fusillade of shots by two policemen. An estimated 100 barrels of beer were stolen. the detective was later released unharmed.
London January 27 funeral services for Viscount Bryce former British ambassador to the United States were held today in the chapel of the crematorium at Golders Green where the body was cremated this morning. The services were attended by many friends of the author and publicist.

Six Indian children aged from a few months to fourteen trekmed through deep snow from the frozen trapping grounds to Welcomb after their father and mother died of influenza. The oldest boy Atchimo, fourteen, tried to summon help while caring for his siblings. They burned furniture to stay warm and were found by neighbors chewed moose flesh for nourishment. The group, aided by John Hingood, reached Welcomb, but the infant remained in danger.
Washington January 27 the National Agricultural Conference adopted a recommendation to appoint a federal commission to formulate a national land policy covering reclamation and irrigation. It opposed opening more land to reclamation now and urged effective fire prevention and forest research.

Hampton Iowa January 27 The Hampton Mercantile Co store burned at 4 am destroying all records and express stock. Loss estimated at 70000 with small insurance. Express offices and Odd Fellows hall also burned. PF Meijer has managed the store eighteen years and FR Butcher is the expressman.
A federal judge issued a temporary order prohibiting striking employees at South St. Paul packing plants from certain picketing methods. Armour & Co. and Swift & Co. petitioned for the injunction amid affidavits claiming workers were assaulted by strikers.
A warrant was issued for A C Townley president of the National Non Partisan League on charges of involvement in the alleged embezzlement of $5 000 from the Scandinavian American bank in Fargo. He is serving a ninety day sentence in Jackson Minnesota for alleged violations of the state espionage law and the warrant will be served when he is released.
Tahlequah Oklahoma January 27 horses overcoats overshoes and rifles belonging to two men who robbed the Farmers State Bank at Parkhill yesterday were found by a sheriff s posse. The bandits escaped with 500 dollars in cash. The posse pressed the chase but surrounding thickets yielded nothing. The pursuit continues.
Theo dore B. Catlin aged 63 warden of the state prison died from nine stab wounds received during the December 11 riot in Marquette Michigan. Deputy Warden Menhennit had died days earlier from knife injuries in the same disturbance.
The recently incorporated Country Club held its first meeting at the Elis Home on West Montgomery street. A nine member board was elected to govern and will later choose officers. Members discussed building a modern clubhouse at Summit Lake with plans and financing to be decided, including whether construction can start this summer.

Washington D C Jan 27 The senate committee investigating charges that American soldiers were hanged without trial in Fraste will likely close next week after today’s testimony. Eighteen witnesses testified none directly supported the charges, adjournment set for Wednesday with twelve more to be heard. If no further witnesses appear the hearing will close and no early report is planned.
Washington nominees report the House adopted an amendment to the impending appropriation bill providing navy yards an opportunity for reconditioning of the Leviathan. The amendment remains subject to a further vote if opponents demand one.
