Plainfield Iowa January 25 Mr and Mrs Ed Phillips and daughter Bessie died in flames when their farm dwelling burned last night. The fire alarm was given at 10 p m and Plainfield volunteers rushed to the farm but found no chance to save the home or family as the house was totally ablaze.
Dubuque Iowa January 25 state and county officials report the Dubuque outlet for the state automobile theft ring has been smashed with sixteen indictments returned by the district court grand jury after a nineteen day session. Five men have been placed under arrest and over ninety stolen cars recovered in the last two months.

C G Rhodes a Kansas City Jeweler sues the city for 1644 dollars claiming merchandise was stolen by three bandits in a store holdup. He files in district court citing the Kansas anti mob law making cities liable for damages from unlawful assembly of three or more persons.
Petition for writs of habeas corpus filed in the Iowa Supreme Court by Bill Oehlander's attorneys argues the death sentence was illegal. It rests on the claim he pleaded guilty on a county attorney's information contrary to Iowa law requiring a grand jury indictment for felonies. Oehlander was convicted of murdering Fort Dodge grocer Bethord Halfpat.

The trial of William Grubb for first degree murder heard testimony that his burglar killed by Grubb was driven by the burglar's platonic love for a married woman. Mrs Mary Agnes Grubb testified that George Corcoran, the slain man, had visited her husband’s home with gifts from recent thefts and that Grubb shot Corcoran after confronting him. Corcoran had pursued the woman, but she said their interest remained platonic.
Henry Gentry of Lawrence Kansas testified to the Senate committee that in France Major Joseph Phillips of Orange New Jersey shot William Patterson a black private for refusing to help the cook cut bread. Patterson died later and Phillips was not heard as being tried. Colonel Jay Barney described a Belleville France court martial with seven black defendants and five white members plus a black magistrate.
