A massive fire in downtown Athens Georgia destroyed three entire city blocks and damaged adjoining buildings. Estimated property loss runs at least four million dollars with no fatalities reported. Authorities believe the blaze started from the explosion of gasoline drums.
Lincoln January 24 A bill makes it a felony to advertise any article for sale untruthfully or for a public utility to advertise to obtain rate increases. The measure also covers promoters and salesmen of blue sky stock. Penalties range from one to three years in prison for individuals or 10000 to 25000 dollars for corporations.
Ex service men figure in two bills in the Nebraska house. One bill calls for a 25000 state appropriation matched by federal funds to train disabled veterans for self supporting vocations. The other would legalize the American Legion along with a list of Greek fraternities.
In New York on January 25 Ed Strang Jer Lewis defended his title against Earl Caddock. Among the spectators were forty Omaha residents who traveled to see the match. Caddock showed the ill effects of the gruelling bout today.

The battleship Florida bringing Secretary Colby and his party home from a South American visit reports to the navy department that it will arrive in Hampton Roads Wednesday. Colby and his party will transfer to the naval yacht Niagara for the trip to Washington. The Florida will then go to the Boston navy yard for overhaul and repairs.

Washington Jan 25 The joint congressional committee has selected Alameda on San Francisco Bay as the main naval fleet base on the Pacific coast. San Diego is named for the principal aviation base and San Pedro for the destroyer base. A northern aviation base at San Point Washington will also be recommended.
Police dragging the Chicago river for a car believed to have carried six people to their deaths locate two vehicles at the river bottom. The first surfaced empty after lying in the water for weeks. the second also appears to be without occupants.
Coblenz January 25 Engelbert Manns a German citizen was sentenced by a German court to be guillotined for the killing of an American soldier last April. He allegedly shot the soldier with a pistol borrowed from the victim to rob 15000 marks.
Milwaukee January 25 District Attorney Zabel warned large taxpayers to avoid displaying their tax schedules and to beware of fashionable young women he called tax vamps He said they frequented the city treasurer’s corridor to peep at schedules and that two men were already fleeced of 200 and a diamond ring.
Des Moines January 25 The armoured motormen equipment valued at fifty thousand dollars has been authorized for the Iowa National Guard according to information received by Adjutant General Louis G Lasher from the militia bureau of the War Department.
