Toledo Ohio January 21 The first meals to be served to unemployed men drew more than 1 200 applicants at a public market. Tickets were issued for thousands of pounds of fish and dozens of potatoes. John Lowell city labor agency commissioner said at least 10 000 people in Toledo are close to starving.
Sac City Iowa January 21 The district court of Sac county ordered J Reynolds of Auburn to replace hitching posts he removed from his premises and to refrain from further interference with them Reynolds had sought a restraining order against Auburn town from maintaining the posts for twenty five years the town filed a cross petition seeking their restoration and alleging necessity of the posts
Des Moines announces the resignation of W. S. Withrow from the state board of parole effective March 1. His term would have expired in July. The governor’s office did not name a successor.
Des Moines Iowa January 21 a joint legislative session committee of farmers and labor was formed yesterday afternoon. F Garber of Leon a farmer's union member heads the committee and it will meet weekly during the legislative session.

Members of the Fraternal Aid Union will convene tomorrow night January 22 at 7 30 at the Knights of Columbus hall. Important business is planned and all members are urged to attend. Refreshments will follow after the lodge session.
At a denomination meeting in Aurora Illinois Dr Herman F Swartz general secretary of the church council announced that the five year campaign remains for 50 million but current plans cover raising 25 million. He spoke to national leaders at the New England Congregational church addressing the drive.
Washington January 21. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved a resolution to accept J. P. Morgan’s gift of his London home as a permanent American embassy building. The gesture would place the embassy at Morgan’s residence site in London.
Eight men were shot and killed in an engagement with Sinn Feiners near Dublin. Seven of the dead were constables. The press cited plans to require motor cars carrying constables to escort Sinn Fein members as hostages in the future.
New York January 21 The missing bond for the Jack Dempsey versus George Carpentier bout was discovered in the safe of manager Jack Kearns after a rust company claim prompted the search. The document had been forfeit for the bout and was now recovered.
Buenos Aires reports from January 21 that the Nippon Yuzen Kaisha plans to bring 5 000 to 6 040 Japanese coolies to Brazil each year. The recruits are described as the lowest type from uncivilized Japanese islands, destined for work on coffee plantations.

London January 21 Charles C Cochran a boxing promoter declares the original contract for the Carpentier Dempsey bout still valid in an official statement from his office this morning.
Charles M Schwab testified before the Walsh committee denying Colonel Abadie's claim that his October 1918 personal expenses totaled 260000 charged to the shipping board. He said the allegation was false and that he paid his expenses himself, receiving no compensation. He admitted a voucher may exist but said it was not for the stated purpose and not charged to ship construction.
Berwick council orders strict Sunday observance revival. Soda fountains ice cream parlors newspaper stands and gasoline stations must close on Sundays with Sunday newspapers barred from streets and stores. Drug stores may only dispense medicines.
Lincoln Nebraska January 2 bill for a life sentence for criminal assault placed on general file with judiciary committee recommendation for indefinite postponement. Introduced by Representative Williams of Fillmore.
Paris report says three French socialists who vanished between Murmansk and Vardoe, Norway while returning from Russia were killed. The Moscow International accuses entente agents of obstructing the landing at Vardee of foreign communists returning from Moscow.
In Leghorn Italy January 21 the communist faction of the Italian socialist party defeated an attempt to gain endorsement by the Third Internationale of Moscow and bolted the socialist convention this morning.
Des Moines January 21 With weather delaying flights Nebraska's electoral vote will be transported by train from Des Moines to Chicago rather than by air today. Mrs H. Ho Wheeler and Mrs Draper Smith will head to Chicago tonight and, if possible, the airplane will follow to pick them up and continue to destination tomorrow.
CATTLE receipts 7,000 with slow to lower trade. Bulk steers 7.75 to 8.75, cows 5 to 6, butcher heifers 5.75 to 7.10, bulls steady. Veal calves 25 cents higher 11.50 to 12.50. Stockers and feeders weak to lower. HOGS receipts around 1,000 with 35 to 40 cents decline. tops 9.60 on light weights. Pigs 9.00 to 9.25. 35 to 40 cents lower for bulk. Desirable under 125 lb 9.10 to 9.60. SHEEP receipts 5,000 with lambs steady to strong.
Butter lower and eggs higher in the wholesale market with receipts totaling 6,297 cases. Firsts average 61 1 percent, ordinary firsts 56 58. Poultry alive unsettled with poults 28 percent and springs 27. at Mark Casee Inc. prices 58 to 60.
Lamson Bros notices closing grain and provisions prices with Wheat May and March, Corn May July, Oats May July, Pork Lard Ribs and cattle and hogs totals. Market shows weakness with receipts and price drops. cattle and hogs markets opened lower and traded weaker.

Post office inspectors raided a Vernon garage and recovered about 75 000 in cash tied to a theft of 31 registered mail packages last Friday. One arrest is Reverend Guy Kyle, ex Free Methodist pastor, with more expected. Around 100 000 was found at Kyle's home mostly in 20 and 50 dollar bills.
Des Moines reports a monthly state payroll between 140 000 and 150 000 dollars totaling more than 1.5 million annually. It covers Statehouse staff, district and supreme court judges, highway commission workers and other outstate employees. Legislators are paid 1 000 dollars per session plus clerical funds of about 77 000 dollars. About 700 workers are on the payroll with a five person auditor staff handling payroll duties.
The Rockford Brick and Tile company received the largest order for brick it has ever had. The order covers 1,500,000 bricks, or 150 carloads of 10,000 bricks each, valued at about 55,000 dollars. The bricks will be used for Hampton Brick and Tile company's new factory at New Hampton.
Plano Frank Pla no stands trial in Chicago for the killing of his wayward son Frank Jr. last March. He says the act was to save the boy’s soul and admits the slaying, citing the son as the black sheep of his ten children who would not heed parental guidance.
