In Avalon California an aviator Lieu tenant William H Rohrbach of Norfolk Virginia was killed and two naval officers were seriously injured when seaplane F-5 L-2 plummeted 2 000 feet and splintered on a rock off Catalina Island. In Cheyenne Wyoming pilot P B Oakes and mechanic William Acer were killed testing an air mail plane that crashed from about 500 feet and burned. Observers say Oakes attempted an Immerman turn from about 100 feet, causing the aerobatic mishap.
