Orient Iowa January 17 special to The Advertiser. The Red Cross Chapter held its annual meeting at the town hall Saturday evening and elected officers for the coming year.
The Modern Woodmen of America local lodge held its yearly officer installation Monday evening at the I. C. O. F. hall with a large turnout. New officers include G. L. Lewis Venerable Consul A. B. Perry Worthy Advisor C. H. Molby Banker Ik W. Brotherton Clerk H. M. Kessler Escort W. G. Anderson Watchman Julius Baron Sentry.
Funeral services for I E Holmes longtime Creston resident who died Sunday at 404 North Pine were conducted at the Methodist Episcopal church with Rev J W Goodsell officiating. The service followed by interment at Cromwell cemetery after the body was taken there from the church.
In Ly Neville president Id Johnson vice president Fred Armstrong secretary Fred Butler treasurer. Red Cross and American Legion expect to work together this year. Mrs Mariette Heifner of Creston visited over Sunday at the Heifner home. Mrs D G Wiley returned home from Boone Sunday. Mrs E S Fitzgerald assists with duties at the Butler home this week. C T Jackson Sr left for Kansas to visit sons and handle business. Leta Butler confined to bed slowly improving. Miss Tillie Helper spent Sunday in Greenfield. Russell Andrews visited Orient Saturday. Jay and Rose Fitzgerald spent Sunday at the Ed Foster home. Jas Williams on Ben Pace farm selling household goods to move to Illinois. Theodore Cook of Pekin Illinois, formerly Orient boy, married. Mrs Erickson and daughter and son visited Belle Swanger. Froya Forest and Laura Proctor spent Sunday at the Basham home. H A Hainline spent last week at Butler home caring for daughter. Charles Batie injured foot putting up ice for Wolfe and Brown. Mr and Mrs Julius Walker visited Creston Saturday. Rev C W Basham left for Des Moines for church convention. Carl Childs of Grand River called on relatives and friends. M E Club met Monday evening with Mrs Fred Strong for Joy Night.
A. T. Laukaus of Albert Lea Minnesota, manager of the Wilson Highway Association, visited this city today to promote the highway. He plans a public meeting soon with details to be announced. The Wilson Highway aims to run from Sioux City Minnesota to Galveston Texas via Creston, described as the shortest Des Moines to Minneapolis route.
The Creston Mutual Telephone Company held its annual stockholders meeting Monday evening at the company office. Officers re-elected include J. C. Sullivan as President Scott Skinner as Vice President Yeo B E Atkinson as Secretary and Manager. W. H. Brady as Treasurer. Directors named: J. C. Sullivan Scott Skinner Geo Rk Atkinson W. H. Brady A Mallory and T P Roberts.
The G T A Ladies of this city will meet with Mrs C W Clark at 521 West Adams street Wednesday afternoon. This will be the regular meeting and a large attendance is desired by those in charge.
Eugene O’Brien stars in the Selznick comedy drama Chivalrous Charley at the Strand tonight. The cast includes Nancy Deaver George Fawcett and Huntley Gordon with Robert Ellis directing the film about Charley Reilly's misadventures from a dining car to New Rochelle aided by motorcycle cops and a comic chase.
Ottumwa Ia Jan 17 H A Brown superintendent of Ottumwa waterworks conducting the preliminary survey for Oskalooga proposed six hundred thousand dollar hydroelectric water power plant has received additional data and inquiries.
In a personal interview Col. H Burgis confirms an army permit will be issued soon to build a dam on the Des Moines river near Harvey Oskaloosa site. Engineer Brown and Col Buris report sent to Washington. plans allow future locks if needed while city buys nearby land for possible lock construction.
Dante Pierce confirms the Atlantic News-Telegraph sold to EFP and C. FL. Chase for 75000 dollars, more than double his purchase price of 22500 dollars last August. He notes profits from operation and his primary interests in Pierce farm publications. Reports at sale time listed 56000 dollars.
Jacksonville police plan to punch registration cards of motorists to record every traffic violation. Officers would stamp the card for each offense, letting the judge see a driver’s history. Repeat violators would face stiffer penalties while cautious drivers receive lighter treatment.
Stockholm Jan. 17. The first section of a high power electric line linking Trollhättan Falls to Vaesternas has opened in central Sweden. Costing over 10 million kroner, it aims to power trains and major industries, reducing coal use as the Central power line expands.
Hackensack New Jersey January 17 Peter Peppe shot and killed his wife at his Little Ferry home then seriously wounded his daughter Mery before dying by suicide Police said Peppe had been arrested for non support and investigators suspect anger over that arrest sparked the tragedy
A Monday correction states that Mrs. J. W. Harmon had gone to Des Moines for a visit. The paper acknowledges this was an error and confirms Mrs. Harmon has been deceased for some time.

Mrs. Nina Gripp travels from Valley to Des Moines then Corydon to visit daughters Edna Gripp and Verner Webb. Little Cecil Perry suffered facial burns from hot lard. Mrs. Moreland died January 5 at her daughter's home Ed. Allen. Funeral held Sunday led by Rev. Shank and Rev. Marple. Valley Church holds special meetings led by Rev. Shank with an all day event Sunday. Mrs. Dan Frederick ill after canker removal from shoulder. friends wish her speedy recovery.
Sam Tuttle served as Talmage caller Sunday while Clifford Holcomb led a Knotts firm session Sunday evening. Families from Orient to Murray are noted visiting relatives and sharing meals as Rev. Abbott preaches.
Afton visitors report scarce work as spring nears and residents hope jobs open. Rev Abbott led a sermon at Otterbine Chapel. prayer meeting set for Wednesday at Talmage. The Talmage Literary Society meets weekly. Cadle Pettit’s eyes show improvement under specialist care.
Columbus Junction Iowa January 1 W A Halley and William Hamondson arrested on manslaughter charges in the death of Harvey Bennett Civil War veteran placed under ten thousand dollar bonds Bennett found dead in a barn on Earl Wilson farm near Letts Believed linked to a booze party at a shack near the fair grounds where Halley used as headquarters The killer clue came from Paxton son of Dr Ed Paxton who said he hauled the body to the Wilson barn after being paid five dollars and heard talk of a broken neck
Seven Red Oak business leaders face Montgomery county grand jury indictments for bootlegging and liquor law violations. Indicted are C. T. Tuttle J. W. Ballard Jake Liddick Robert Russell Jess Shanks Howard Norris and Tom Philpot. Shanks and Norris charged with maintaining a liquor nuisance. All were arrested recently and before a United States commissioner at Council Bluffs on federal liquor charges. the commissioner released them. Rumors claim Tuttle owns an airplane used to transport liquor to Red Oak.
Authorities dispute evidence against Tuttle in a booze operation case while bonds for six of seven indicted men are set at 1009 dollars each and Philpot’s at 300 dollars. All seven have posted bonds.
Eleven crew members of the German steamer Vesta and the wife of the chief mate were killed when naphtha laden cargo shifted and an explosion sparked a blaze at sea. Ten crew survivors were picked up by a trawler at Lowestoft. captain and nine men escaped death.
