Mrs. David Jayne Hill aged 60 wife of the former ambassador to Germany died from injuries in an auto accident in Washington D C She was hospitalized with broken ribs and internal injuries described as extremely critical before her death.
Nine wallets and purses were found in a sewer serving the Chicago and Great Western stations in Marshalltown Iowa. The discovery ties to traveler losses reported on the two days before Christmas. A World War veteran at the Iowa Soldiers home had a pocketbook with sixty dollars missing.
Paris January 16 The reparations committee in session rushed through a decision that Germany has been guilty of wilful default in shipments to the allies. President Barthou stated Germany's refusal to deliver required goods was open defiance to the allies.
Washington report shows United States exports of wheat rising to 3,533,000 bushels for the week ending January 13, up from 1,578,000, while corn exports reach 1,421,000 bushels, up from 299,000. The data comes from the Department of Commerce.

Springfield Illinois January 16 The injunction suit to test the constitutionality of the Illinois bonus act was dismissed by Judge E S Smith of the Sangamon circuit court He refused the injunction and questioned the act’s constitutionality noting it pays for services already rendered in the past.
A seven story paper bag plant valued at over 250000 is a total loss after a fire that threatened a bonded warehouse and forced the withdrawal of 190 workers from the nearby tunnel project. Large quantities of soaked paper caused bulging walls at the Miller and Tompkins plant where the blaze began.

Four boys under five years old suffocated in a Hugh Carlson home fire in Fort Dodge Iowa. Neighbors found them after a couch caught fire from matches. the children tried to crawl under the burning couch to escape. Three were Carlson children, the fourth child was related through Mrs Carlson’s sister.

Monaco installs Prince Louis as ruler after Prince Albert’s death. Sparked by a torch light parade and a palace ceremony, the event drew about seven hundred of the realm’s 16 000 subjects as the premier pledged loyalty and Louis gave a brief address. Louis will renounce French citizenship to govern the state within French borders.
A joint committee of legislators and farm organizations will assemble at Sioux City on January 24 to determine the actual needs of agriculturists in the region.
In Williamsburg on January 16 Mrs. Raymond Nichols telephoned a neighbor claiming she had taken poison. Neighbors found her with a bottle of ether, but she had not ingested anything. Dr. J. G. Hayes and Nichols attended. she remained highly hysterical, slept, and later recalled nothing of the events. The episode was not serious and she recovered.
