Fonda Iowa, January reports a public school fire that destroyed the building Friday afternoon. Pupils, led by teachers, were evacuated with no injuries. The blaze started in the attic, noticed from an incoming train, and insured for 930,000. Classes to resume next week in empty town store rooms as rebuilding plans begin.
Chicago January 15 Michigan today climbs into Iowa's spot in a triple tie for Western conference leadership after a 41 to 22 defeat of Iowa at the field house dedicatory crowd. Illinois, Ohio State, Indiana, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Minnesota and Purdue fill the rest of the slate with varying conference fortunes. Purdue and Wisconsin each carry one win and one loss in the standings as Meanwell of Wisconsin asserts his club as the class of the league.
Des Moines Iowa January proposals draft a plan to form a joint committee with Illinois and Wisconsin to buy a Mississippi River bridge at Dubuque and open it toll free. Senator Lange of Dubuque introduced the resolution for the next week’s legislature. The governor urges a free bridge policy in his message. Two existing Dubuque bridges connect to Illinois and Wisconsin territory. Lange suggests purchasing one bridge with the involved state.
An offer of 25000 for the city hall and its grounds was submitted to city officials. Presented through Lansing W. Hulburt and tied to M L Burt, the offer lacks clear representation or stated intended use. The aldermen will review at the upcoming council meeting. city hall also contains the jail fire station sleeping quarters and rest room.
Tennessee's high court affirmed the constitutionality of the anti evolution law but reversed the Dayton trial verdict on fines. It urged nolle prosequi for John T. Scopes and noted the judge could not impose more than fifty dollars, with the attorney general considering refiled action. Scopes, a Dayton teacher, was convicted in July 1925 for teaching evolution.
Washington reports a sharp Senate floor confrontation as Senators Walsh and Heflin traded barbs over the Knights of Columbus stance toward Mexico. Meanwhile Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Borah pressed Kellogg on the publication of a revised version of his testimony, claiming deletions and rewrites were made before printing.
Ralph Neville of Clearfield spent Friday in Creston handling business. Mrs. Warren Young with Mrs. Mary Clinton left for Corning to visit Young’s mother Mrs. Louisa J. Schull for the day.
Waterloo Iowa Jan 15 Marjorie Lansing 17 is dead from carbon monoxide poisoning and her fiancé Ralph Windolf 25 is near death from gas generated by the engine of his coupe in which they sat last night while Windolf warmed the engine for his return to the city after a call at the girl s home outside the corporation limits The tragedy was found when the stepfather Walter Kenninson alarmed at her delay went to call attention to the time at about 2 am She was dead Windolf unconscious The car a light coupe had been sealed to keep out cold and two heaters were operating The machine stood near the girl s residence where the couple had spent the evening
The executive committee of the Union County Farm Bureau will meet Tuesday Jan 18 to discuss proposed legislation for the forty second Iowa General Assembly. They will form recommendations to send to Union County House representative Frank Ickis. Bank and income tax laws will be reviewed and a survey committee on Iowa tax conditions may be appointed.
Washington January 15 The senate campaign funds committee will seek a court order directing transfer of Philadelphia ballots cast in the November Pennsylvania senatorial election. The committee, amid the Wilson Ware contest, met with Mayor Kendrick and Philadelphia officials to discuss legal means to turn over the ballots. Wilson, a Democrat, and Ware, a Republican, were present to offer opinions.

Three Pan American planes named San Antonio San Francisco and Detroit arrived today from Amapola Honduras and landed safely on Lake Managua officials said in Managua on January 15.
Austin Tex Jan 15 The Rev J Frank Norris faced a surprise witness in district court as Mrs Roxie Parker testified she stood near the study door when Norris allegedly fired on Dexter E Chipps inside the Fort Worth Baptist church on July 17. Parker said a man in the doorway warned I ll be back before shots rang out.
Edith Miller wife of a Des Moines taxi driver was convicted in district court of conspiracy to defraud. She was arrested with Charles Marks now jailed at Marshalltown for issuing worthless checks to five Ames merchants. Bonds surrendered she remains jailed awaiting sentence. Each check was about $25 for small purchases.
Charles Chaplin, the film comedian, collapsed and was ordered to bed in New York. Doctors said his nervous system had been affected by worry over his marital troubles.
Norman Ross from Chicago George Young of Toronto and W W Summers of Alameda led after 33 minutes of the Wrigley ocean marathon starting from San Pedro Calif as 43 men and 9 women of 154 entrants failed to start. Phillip Moore of Los Angeles quit at 11 48 am along with Co L Webster of Newport Beach and Clarence Hauser of Long Beach. Prizes totaling 40000 await the first to swim the frigid channel across 22 miles to the mainland.
The Isthmus Catalina Island Calif Jan 15 One hundred two swimmers were officially checked in for the start of the Wrigley ocean marathon here today. Nine of the 22 women swimmers were not ready to paddle off as the starter held the pistol. Forty three men entrants dropped out before the race started.
A heavy fog over the San Pedro channel separates Santa Catalina Island from the mainland as nearly 150 swimmers gather on the beach awaiting the pistol at 11 o'clock to begin the Wrigley ocean marathon toward the 22 mile mainland goal.
Mrs Josephine Crow died suddenly at her Prescott home this morning. She was sister to Charles and G A Showers of Creston and had lived in Prescott many years. Survived by several grown children. Funeral services set for Monday at 2 o clock at the Methodist church in Prescott.
Mrs A F Luther of Bedford and Mrs James A Jackson of Hopkins spent the day here en route to Des Moines to visit their brother George A Chaney. Miss Catherine Noonan left this afternoon for Des Moines after spending several days in the city as a guest of friends.
Charles Launsbach, 55, lifelong Sioux City jewelry business figure, was murdered at an oil station last night. A 32 caliber revolver was found on him. police questioned a possible hold up, noting a locked station decor and a missing center pane with a bullet hole. Investigators found $25.40 in cash and an empty 38 caliber cartridge, while his loaded revolver remained undischarged.
Osceola edged Creston 22 to 17 in a high school gym clash. A first minute basket gave Osceola the lead they kept, with Creston hampered by injuries and no substitutions. The junior girls tied 8 to 8, as Creston could not force a replay.

Thirty-two children escapes uninjured from the American Home Findings association building in Ottumwa Iowa after a basement and office fire. A passerby alerted the custodian and matrons who dressed the children and led them to safety. Twenty children sheltered with Rev. W G Ramsey across the street, while twelve boys went to the Y M C A. The loss was about 1000 dollars.
Federal trial of Arthur Retland ends without a decision after seven hours of delib eration. Judge Thomas C. Munger dismissed the jury at 3 p m with one count given a directed verdict of not guilty. The four remaining counts went unresolved as the panel was discharged. Retland, from near Mt Etna, faced obscenity charges over letters mailed to Lucille Shaeffer of Carbon. Court adjourned until Feb 22. Retland remains free on bond.

Des Moines university trustees announce the institution will continue without interruption for the coming year and permanently. A $21,000 budget for the year and gifts totaling $15,009 from the Iowa Baptist convention and the Northern Baptist convention support the decision, despite recent rumors of closure or consolidation.
The remaining assets of the closed State Saving Bank of Afton were to be sold at public auction this afternoon. The bank closed about two years ago and has been managed by the state department of Banking. The assets consist of notes and judgments that remain unpaid, representing all outstanding claims.
